🏴☠️ FOUND: One peg leg. STILL MISSING: Fred’s left arm.
Check out this incredible piece on display at the Wyndham Museum! This isn't just any old piece of timber—it’s an authentic, hand-carved antique prosthetic "peg leg" dating back to the late 19th or early 20th century.
While more " high-end", artificial limbs existed back then, they were far too expensive for the average working-class farmer or laborer. Instead, resourceful locals would head to the town blacksmith and woodworker to have these custom-made! A local blacksmith would forge the iron collar to keep the wood from splitting and cast the metal foot at the bottom.
This clever design allowed the wearer to actually slip a standard boot or shoe over it, helping them blend in and get right back to hard work. It's a brilliant, gritty piece of historic engineering.
As for our resident mannequin, Fred... well, we are still actively hunting for his missing arm. But hey, a peg leg is a step in the right direction! 🦵🦿
