• TWO WEEKS LEFT TO ENTER! •
📸 Deadline: 11.59pm Sunday 14 June

Every year the finalists of the Bowness Photography Prize are eligible to receive the Wai Tang Commissioning Award. In 2025 artist Sarah Rhodes was that recipient, for her work ‘Chamber of projection I’ (pictured).

When you win the commission, you’re awarded $10,000 and a solo exhibition at MAPh.

MAPh Director Anouska Phizacklea says the intention of the award ‘hinges on potentiality and exploration – providing a photographer with the opportunity, freedom and space to create a new body of work that could go anywhere and delve into any subject matter or thematic.‘

This opportunity could come your way when you enter the Bowness Photography Prize: be sure to submit your work before the deadline for the chance to be one of the shortlisted artists in this year’s exhibition.

Link in bio or maph.org.au/bowness-photography-prize for entry requirements, the FAQs, details on the Wai Tang Commission — and the entry portal.

Direct your enquiries to [email protected] or call 85440500.

Last day to view CODED BLOOMS | flowers have never been innocent at MAPh 🌹

See the floral still lifes of Robert Mapplethorpe alongside four Australian artists' works in response: Pat Brassington, Del Kathryn Barton, Jake Preval and Meng-Yu Yan.

In his review via M-ArtLens, critic Stavros Messinis observes: 'The exhibition resists reducing Mapplethorpe to the controversies historically surrounding his work. Instead, it foregrounds his extraordinary understanding of photography’s ability to transform surfaces into emotionally resonant forms. His flowers are never simply symbols of beauty; they remain inseparable from desire, tension and the body itself.'

MAPh is grateful to the National Gallery of Australia for the loan of these Mapplethorpe works. See them before they go back home to Canberra!
