We already shared that SHALA_Neighbourhood Art Space is presenting a total of 20 films and video arts at Backyard Biennial: East 2026 in London in collaboration with Oitij-jo Collective and Whitechapel Gallery. We are happily sharing that we are going to screen the films and video arts in Dhaka on 14th August 2026 at our SHALA_Neighbourhood Art Space.

We are presenting the films and artworks under two categories- The Process of Being Womxn and Labour, Migration and Home. The Process of Being Womxn centres narratives focusing on women’s energy, disruption and renewal. Labour, Migration and Home deals with accidental death of garment workers in Bangladesh, labour of migrants in the abroad, the unending chain of labor in the tea plantation in Bangladesh, formations and transformations of home and reflection on an industry and its labourer in the period of British India.

‘শালা_নেইবারহুড আর্ট স্পেস’ ( SHALA_Neighbourhood Art Space) ৩১ জুলাই ২০২৬ তারিখে একটি ‘নেইবারহুড মিউজিয়াম’ বা পাড়া-মহল্লা ভিত্তিক জাদুঘর গড়ে তোলার ভাবনা নিয়ে আলোচনার আয়োজন করে এবং এই প্রকল্পের সূচনা করে। শালা’র প্রতিবেশী আব্দুর রহিম, সুরাইয়া আক্তার এবং হালিমা তুস সাদিয়া তাদের জাদুঘর পরিদর্শনের অভিজ্ঞতা বিনিময় করেন এবং আমাদের পাড়ার জাদুঘরে কী কী বিষয় বা বস্তু স্থান পেতে পারে, তা নিয়ে নিজেদের ভাবনা তুলে ধরেন। আলোচনাটি সঞ্চালনা করেন আমাদের গবেষক ফাহিম হামিদ।

‘নেইবারহুড মিউজিয়াম’ একটি ভিন্নধর্মী দৃষ্টিভঙ্গি প্রস্তাব করে, যেখানে সাধারণ মানুষের জীবন, স্থানীয় জ্ঞান, স্মৃতি, আবেগ এবং দৈনন্দিন ব্যবহারের বস্তুসমূহকে ঐতিহ্যের অর্থবহ উপাদান হিসেবে গুরুত্ব দেওয়া হয়। অংশগ্রহণকারীরা জোর দিয়ে বলেন যে, এই জাদুঘরটি তার ওয়েবসাইটের মাধ্যমে এলাকার গল্পগুলো নথিবদ্ধ ও সংরক্ষণ অব্যাহত রাখবে। এর ফলে গড়ে উঠবে একটি ক্রমবিকাশমান ও সম্প্রদায়-চালিত সংগ্রহশালা (আর্কাইভ), যা সেখানে বসবাসকারী ও কর্মরত মানুষের কণ্ঠস্বর ও অভিজ্ঞতার প্রতিফলন ঘটাবে।

আগামী দিনগুলোতে আমরা আমাদের এলাকার বাস্তবতাকে নথিবদ্ধ করার কাজ চালিয়ে যাব। আমাদের ‘নেইবারহুড মিউজিয়াম’ গড়ে তোলার এই উদ্যোগে শামিল হওয়ার জন্য আমরা এলাকার বাসিন্দা ও বিভিন্ন সমষ্টিগত উদ্যোগের (কালেক্টিভ) প্রতি আহ্বান জানাচ্ছি।

SHALA_Neighbourhood Art Space successfully held discussion imagining a neighbourhood museum and launched the Neighbourhood Museum project on 31 July 2026. SHLALA’s neighbors Abdur Rahim, Suraiya Akter and Halima Tus Sadia shared their experience with museum visits and imagined what would be kept in our neighbourhood museum. The discussion was moderated by our researcher Fahim Hamid.

The Neighbourhood Museum proposes a different approach, one that values ordinary lives, local knowledge, memories, emotions, and everyday objects as meaningful forms of heritage. Participants emphasized that the Neighbourhood Museum will continue documenting and preserving the stories of its neighbourhood through its website, creating an evolving, community-led archive that reflects the voices and experiences of the people who live and work there.

In the coming days, we will continue to document our neighbourhood realities. We invite our neighbours and neighbourhood collectives to join us in making our Neighbourhood Museum.

What can be our Neighbourhood Museum?

Over the past few weeks, SHALA_Neighbourhood Art Space has been exploring the relationship between an art space and its neighbourhood. Through conversations, interviews, and shared experiences, we invited our neighbours to contribute objects carrying memories, histories, and traces of everyday life to build a temporary Neighbourhood Museum.

This experiment has grown into something meaningful. Rather than ending it, we are opening a conversation about its future.

Join us for an open discussion with three neighbours who participated in this temporary museum as we reflect on what a Neighbourhood Museum could become for our community.

কেমন হতে পারে আমাদের প্রতিবেশী জাদুঘর ?

জুলাই এর শুরু থেকে শালা_নেইবারহুড আর্ট স্পেসের উদ্যোগে আমরা একটি গবেষণা প্রশ্ন নিয়ে কাজ করছিঃ একটি শিল্পচর্চার স্থান কীভাবে তার আশপাশের মানুষের সঙ্গে সম্পর্ক গড়ে তোলে?

এই ভাবনা থেকে আমরা আমাদের প্রতিবেশীদের সঙ্গে কথা বলেছি, তাদের অভিজ্ঞতা শুনেছি এবং তাদের আমন্ত্রণ জানিয়েছি স্মৃতি, অনুভুতি ও দৈনন্দিন জীবনের গল্প বহনকারী নানা বস্তু জাদুঘরে তারা রাখতে পারেন ।
এই আলোচনায় অংশ নেবেন আমাদের তিনজন প্রতিবেশী, যারা এই অস্থায়ী জাদুঘরে অংশগ্রহণ করেছেন । আমরা একসঙ্গে ভাবতে চাই, ভবিষ্যতের প্রতিবেশী জাদুঘর বা আর্কাইভ কেমন হতে পারে।

SHALA_Neighbourhood Art Space presents 20 films and video works from Bangladesh at Backyard Biennial: East 2026, in collaboration with OITIJ-JO Art Space and Whitechapel Gallery. The programme is presented with OITIJ-JO Collective as part of Whitechapel Gallery’s 125th anniversary celebrations.

This film screening series brings contemporary Bangladeshi moving image practices to London through 20 short films and video works across two thematic sections, The Process of Being Womxn and Labour, Migration and Home. Screenings will take place at the Zilkha Auditorium, Whitechapel Gallery, and OITIJ-JO Art Space from 15 July to 6 September 2026.

Join us in celebrating stories of identity, memory, labour, migration, resilience, and transformation through the voices of Bangladeshi artists and filmmakers.
