NOW ON VIEW: C A S S T L is pleased to present for the first time in Belgium the work of the celebrated Spanish artist collective Equipo 57.

Created in 1957, and lasting until 1962, Equipo 57 was a milestone in the history of artistic modernity in Spain. Equipo 57 positioned itself along an experimental line, favoring a certain interdisciplinarity that sought to bring together artistic and scientific research. Making use of a rigorous abstract geometric language, Equipo 57 defended a type of art with a strong social and political commitment.

Curated by Antoni Ferrer (), the exhibition will bring together a selection of works, including paintings, gouaches, and film—alongside materials that provide historical context. This project is made in collaboration with Galería Rafael Ortiz () and the generous support of the Spanish Embassy in Belgium ().

Opening: Thursday, May 14 from 18:00 till 21:00

On view until June 19.

Eunkyung Lee approaches painting as a material and temporal system. Her canvases develop through repeated cycles of layering and abrasion. Paint accumulates, is removed, and redistributed, allowing earlier strata to remain active within later formations. Through this process, the canvas is transformed from a receptive plane into a site of excavation and erosion. Form emerges through dynamic relationships between internal curves and external linear structures. Instead of beginning with predetermined outlines, Lee allows internal configurations to generate external forms. As internal elements shift, external structures respond accordingly. These configurations remain open to modification, and form persists as potential rather than fixed identity. Time becomes embedded within this evolving framework. Each layer anticipates transformation. Each act of abrasion reactivates previous deposits. Accumulation and erosion operate together, producing circulative sequences of construction and reconfiguration, thereby drawing earlier strata continually into the present and rendering temporal depth materially visible.

Jungwoo Lee develops geometric paintings that explore patterns of order and movement. Using points, lines, and grids, he constructs layered visual structures that reference geometric patterns embedded across human history, from ancient civilisations to contemporary systems of knowledge. These patterns reflect humanity’s long-standing effort to visualise underlying structures and principles that shape both nature and perception. Although these references pass through different historical and cultural contexts, they do not settle into fixed meanings or symbols. Instead, they register moments in which order becomes perceptible, while remaining open to instability and change. Form emerges through shifting relationships between alignment and fluctuation, stability and movement.

The landscapes in Kyounghee Noh’s paintings originate from her direct experiences. She selects moments from photographs taken during travel or everyday life and translates them onto canvas. For her, the forest is not an object to be consumed instantly. Sensory impressions gathered while walking forest paths—the texture of soil, the moisture of leaves, the coldness of stone—pass through her body and are slowly filtered over time. These embodied experiences are not immediately converted into images; instead, a temporal gap emerges between experience and representation, often spanning months or even years. During this interval, fleeting moments encountered in the forest are repeatedly worked over on the canvas, gradually becoming what might be called “sustained moments.” The instant is no longer a discrete unit of time, but a condensed mass of duration, shaped through repetition and persistence. What viewers encounter, therefore, is not a depiction of a forest, but a surface in which delayed time and sensation have been compressed.
