Seeing Katharina: zwarte vrouwen in beeld

Op zaterdag 4 juli verwelkomen we antropoloog Bambi Ceuppens en multidisciplinair kunstenaar Kadia Doumbouya voor een salongesprek dat vertrekt vanuit Seeing Katharina (2026), het nieuwe werk van Sammy Baloji dat momenteel te zien is in Kunsthal Extra City.

Samen met moderator Laetitia Sabiti gaan ze in gesprek over de representatie van zwarte vrouwen in de westerse kunstgeschiedenis, de doorwerking van historische beelden en de manier waarop kunstenaars vandaag hun eigen beeld opeisen.

Seeing Katharina: Black Women in Representation

On Saturday 4 July, anthropologist Bambi Ceuppens and multidisciplinary artist Kadia Doumbouya join Laetitia Sabiti for a salon conversation inspired by Seeing Katharina (2026), Sammy Baloji’s new tapestry currently on view at Kunsthal Extra City.

Together, they will reflect on the representation of Black women in Western art history, the lasting impact of historical images, and the ways artists reclaim and reshape those images today.

Wat een mooie start van Biophony: Beats of Love. 💓

Bedankt aan het team van Antwerp Q***r Arts Festival, alle kunstenaars en bezoekers om van de opening zo'n warme avond te maken. We delen graag enkele sfeerbeelden.

De tentoonstelling, gecureerd door Antwerp Q***r Arts Festival, loopt nog tot en met 16 augustus in Kunsthal Extra City.

Je ontdekt er het werk van Delta Van Melle, Aida Krnic, Cyn Micheli, Phara De Jaegere, Exter, Vural Saglam, F***y Wellens, Bobby Benzo Brown, Hunter Claes, Lize Maekelberg, Billie Q en Juliet Jespers.

Het zijn de laatste dagen om Lapsarian 3.0 van Goda Palekaitė te bezoeken in Kunsthal Extra City. 📢

Centraal in de tentoonstelling staat Lapsarian 3.0 (2026), een nieuw werk dat speciaal voor Kunsthal Extra City werd ontwikkeld. Voor deze installatie liet Palekaitė zich inspireren door de Romeinse catacomben: ondergrondse ruimtes die tijdens de geleidelijke val van het Romeinse Rijk niet alleen als begraafplaatsen dienden, maar ook als plekken van ontmoeting, schuilen en verandering.

Vanuit deze historische periode reflecteert de kunstenaar op onze huidige tijd van geopolitieke, ecologische en technologische crisis. Wat zijn vandaag de verborgen infrastructuren die onze wereld vormgeven? Welke nieuwe systemen ontstaan terwijl oude beginnen af te brokkelen? Het videowerk binnen de installatie werd gerealiseerd in samenwerking met Gert Van Berckelaer.

Je kan Lapsarian 3.0 nog bezoeken tot en met 31.05.2026.

Final days to visit Lapsarian 3.0 by Goda Palekaitė at Kunsthal Extra City. 📢

At the heart of the exhibition lies Lapsarian 3.0 (2026), a newly commissioned installation inspired by the Roman catacombs — underground spaces where, during the collapse of the Roman Empire, new belief systems and forms of community quietly began to emerge.

Drawing connections between this historical threshold and today’s geopolitical, ecological and technological crises, Palekaitė imagines what the “catacombs” of our own time might look like: lithium mines, data centres and hidden infrastructures shaping life above ground. The video work within the installation was created in collaboration with Gert Van Berckelaer.
