He gained international fame through his coffee table books “A Continent in the Picture”, “To the Rhythm of the Sun”, “Africa XL”, “Terra Africana” and “African Queen”. Over the years his style has become more serene and restrained, stripped of any excess, complex perspectives and difficult angles. The portraits he is shooting have one thing in common: they draw their graphic strength from their s

implicity. To him photography is a quest for a magical and mysterious world, where there’s a very fine line between reality and impression. This is certainly true for this collection of photographs, which highlights the unsurpassed beauty of African women.

“I just miss you”

‘I am reduced to a thing that wants Virginia.’ So begins a letter from Vita Sackville-West to Virginia Woolf, written in Milan and dated 21 January 1926. Sackville-West was married and had two sons. Yet throughout her life she was more attracted to women than men. Of her many love affairs, the one with Woolf is perhaps the most haunting. The relationship would inspire Woolf’s novel Orlando, described as ‘the longest and most charming love letter in literature’.

The many letters exchanged between Vincent and Theo van Gogh show a warm, close, brotherly friendship. Vincent opens up to his brother about his dire financial situation, his unstable mental state, which he increasingly sees as problematic and unhealthy, his loneliness, his addiction to alcohol, and his serious doubts about his future as an artist.

On March 3, 2018, Kalyani Kolli wrote an open letter to herself, reflecting on self-compassion and personal growth.

‘I did not change my identity to become stronger, I just started to care more about myself. Self-worth is everything, but so easily overlooked. Love yourself and everything will fall into place, trust me’.

“Your letter”

Emily Dickinson was an influential American poet who lived a deeply private and isolated life.

In the spring of 1852, she wrote this letter to Susan Gilbert Dickinson, her sister-in-law and neighbor, with whom she shared an intimate and romantic relationship. Susan Gilbert is widely considered to have been brilliant and was probably the most important muse in Emily Dickinson’s life.

How can a photograph give form to words? What remains when a deeply personal letter outlives its author and continues to resonate across generations?

In Conversions, Belgian photographer Eddy Van Gestel transforms intimate historical correspondence into evocative photographic works that explore the emotional threads connecting us across time. Drawing inspiration from letters written by figures including Frida Kahlo, Vincent van Gogh, Georgia O’Keeffe, Marilyn Monroe, Napoleon Bonaparte, Kurt Cobain, Holly Butcher and many others, the series examines the universal experiences that define the human condition.

The resulting works invite viewers to complete the narrative with their own memories and emotions. Conversions reflects on photography’s ability to transform written language into visual poetry and private emotion into shared experience.
