πŸ—“οΈ in 1944, the first 120 Sherman Fireflies were thrown into action in Normandy, four days after D-Day.

Armed with the powerful Ordnance QF 17-pounder anti-tank gun, they could pierce 160 to 170 mm of armour from approximately 500 metres away. A serious threat to the Tiger and Panter tanks of the Waffen-SS and the Wehrmacht, who quickly made the Fireflies their priority target.

This Firefly is a Sherman M4A4, delivered in October 1942 by the Detroit Tank Arsenal with serial number 5609. Converted to a Sherman Firefly Vc in 1944, it took part in the liberation of France and Belgium and later in the fighting in Germany. A vehicle with an impressive story! πŸ”₯

πŸ‘‰ Come and admire it up close at Bastogne Barracks and discover the story behind this remarkable vehicle for yourself!

June 6, 1944, 82 years ago πŸͺ–

, thousands of Allied soldiers stormed the beaches of Normandy in one of the most decisive moments of the Second World War. And it wasn't just the infantry that was crucial, tanks also played a key role.

At the request of the Allied high command, Major-General Percy Hobart developed specialised armoured vehicles to cross obstacles, clear mines and make the landing possible. Their unusual appearance quickly earned them a legendary nickname: Hobart's Funnies πŸ”§

At Bastogne Barracks, you'll find the Minotaur, a Churchill Mark IV that was never converted into a Hobart's Funny, but carries an impressive story. Come and admire her , and explore the rest of our collection of armoured vehicles, which also played their part in shaping this chapter of History πŸ•Š

🐘 TIME FOR A JUMBO SURPRISE! 🐘

Remember back in April we teased you with two special first time visitors to our show;
We are incredibly proud to announce that the famous β€œFirst in Bastogne” Sherman Jumbo ,from War Heritage Institute at Bastogne Barracks in Belgium, will be appearing at Operation Market Harborough this year πŸ‘
Alongside the Jagdpanther 411 these two vehicles compliment our incredible World War Two fleet of vehicles.

Fresh from its appearance at Tankfest, this internationally recognised vehicle will then be heading to join us for what promises to be an unforgettable weekend.

Presented in the iconic markings of the legendary β€œCobra King”, the tank famous for being the first to break through to the surrounded troops in Bastogne during the Battle of the Bulge, this tank helps to tell an important part of history.

The War Heritage Institute is responsible for preserving and promoting Belgium’s military history, caring for historic collections and vehicles to ensure these important stories continue to be shared with future generations.

To have a vehicle of this significance attending a smaller UK show like ours is something we are immensely proud of, and we cannot thank the War Heritage Institute enough for their support in helping make this happen. And who knows; they maybe bringing something else as well!

Keep an eye out on our social media for Friday as we have another big announcement about how you can enjoy our show! 🀫πŸ₯Έ

πŸ”§ Restoration in progress!

πŸ‘¨β€πŸ”§ Our M26 Pershing is currently being disassembled and sandblasted by our
mechanics and volunteers.

Named after American General John Pershing , the Pershing arrived on the European battlefield in January 1945. It came just in time, when Allied forces urgently needed something more powerful than the Sherman to face Germany's heavy armor.

The tank in our collection was built in 1945 at the Fisher Body factory and reached
Belgium through the Mutual Defense Aid Program.

Our goal? To get this piece of living history running again. Stay tuned! βš™οΈπŸ›‘οΈ
