📅 in 1915: Edith Cavell was executed by firing squad.

On 12 October 1915, British nurse Edith Cavell was executed by a German firing squad at the National R***e Range in Schaerbeek, Brussels. During the First World War, she cared for wounded soldiers and helped Allied servicemen escape from occupied Belgium.

Arrested for her role in this network, she was sentenced to death by a German military court. She spent her final days in Saint-Gilles Prison.

Her ex*****on sparked widespread international outrage. The British used her story in recruitment campaigns, helping to build support for the introduction of conscription in January 1916.

🏛️ Come and discover more stories from the First World War at our museum.

Haar executie veroorzaakte grote internationale verontwaardiging.

💥 in 1944: one of the deadliest V2 attacks in Belgium up to that point

On 7 October 1944, a German V2 rocket struck Place Kuborn in Seraing. At least 22 people were killed and around 180 homes were damaged.

But what was the difference between a V1 and a V2?

A V1 flying bomb was an unmanned aircraft powered by a jet engine. A V2 was a true rocket that followed a high arcing trajectory before falling almost without warning. A V1 could still be intercepted, while a V2 was much harder to counter.

📸 The wreck in the photo is that of a V1 shot down over Brussels in 1944 by a British anti-aircraft unit in Uccle.
