A conversation with Fabien Toulmé, Jibé and Mathieu Diez: graphic journalism and their experiences in Beirut 🇱🇧
How do you portray a city, a country and a personal experience through comics?
Fabien Toulmé, Jibé and Mathieu Diez all have a special connection with Beirut and Lebanon, each in their own way. They are coming to the Comic Art Museum in Brussels this month to share their experiences, their perspectives on the city and their approach to depicting reality through comics.
Mathieu Diez lived in Beirut for four years with his family, whilst working at the French Embassy. This experience gave rise to his comic book "Tout mais pas Beyrouth" ("Everything but Beirut") (Éditions Delcourt), a sensitive chronicle of a city marked by economic crisis, the port explosion and the October 2024 war, illustrated by Jibé.
Fabien Toulmé, author of "L’Odyssée d’Hakim" amongst other works, will also be joining us to share his experience of documentary comics and his work on Lebanon.
A fascinating discussion about Beirut, documentary comics, personal accounts and the way in which drawings can depict reality.
