A conversation with Fabien Toulmé, Jibé and Mathieu Diez: graphic journalism and their experiences in Beirut 🇱🇧

How do you portray a city, a country and a personal experience through comics?

Fabien Toulmé, Jibé and Mathieu Diez all have a special connection with Beirut and Lebanon, each in their own way. They are coming to the Comic Art Museum in Brussels this month to share their experiences, their perspectives on the city and their approach to depicting reality through comics.

Mathieu Diez lived in Beirut for four years with his family, whilst working at the French Embassy. This experience gave rise to his comic book "Tout mais pas Beyrouth" ("Everything but Beirut") (Éditions Delcourt), a sensitive chronicle of a city marked by economic crisis, the port explosion and the October 2024 war, illustrated by Jibé.

Fabien Toulmé, author of "L’Odyssée d’Hakim" amongst other works, will also be joining us to share his experience of documentary comics and his work on Lebanon.

A fascinating discussion about Beirut, documentary comics, personal accounts and the way in which drawings can depict reality.

Our sketching sessions are back! ✏🥳

We’re kicking off the new school year with some fantastic news: from now on, you can come and sketch at the Comic Art Museum not just once, but twice a month! That means twice as many chances to pop in, and twice as much fun!

On 13 September, we’ll be kicking off our new season with comic artist Léa Jarrin. She’s known for her humorous comics that strike a balance between activism and journalism. Her latest comic, "Tous les mêmes", was published in 2025, in which she she takes on various contemporary (political) issues. The conclusion? Embrace contradictions and our elitism, because if there’s one thing that unites us all, it’s our tendency to feel superior, whilst ultimately we’re all the same. – Léa Jarrin

BIG NEWS ! 📣

The Brussels Comic Art Museum and Editions Kana are proud to present a new exhibition : MANGATOPIA - 30 years of manga from Kana!

📅 DATES : from 16 October 2026 till 17 May 2027
🇧🇪 WHERE : Rue des Sables 20, 1000 Brussels

The publisher Kana, one of the pioneers of manga publishing in French, celebrates its 30th anniversary in 2026. On that occasion, you are invited to explore the imaginary city of Mangatopia, designed as a subjective mapping of the medium's features, through a selection of works from Kana's catalogue.

We are particularly grateful to Inio Asano, the artist behind « Bonne nuit Punpun », « Dead Dead Demon's Dededededestruction » or again « Mujina into the deep » for the magnificent drawing of the exhibition poster! 😍

More details coming soon 😉

Party in our street! 🎉

The Meyboom was planted for the 718th time in a row! 🌳 It’s a major annual event, right on our doorstep, where a tree – always a beech tree 18 to 20 metres tall – is planted at the junction of Broekstraat and Zandstraat. It’s a tradition dating back to 1213, when some people from Brussels got into a fight with some people from Leuven. Brussels won, and to celebrate, they plant a tree every year. Incidentally, the tree must be planted every year on 9 August before 5 pm; otherwise, the people of Leuven are allowed to plant it. Fortunately, we were well in time again this year! 🥳

Discover young Moroccan comic talent! 🇲🇦

A while ago, we organised a comic strip competition for schools – you can still admire the winners’ work in our museum – and we ran it in partnership with Morocco! The winners of that sister competition are now also on display on our museum walls. Their works reflect the creativity and talent of Morocco’s young comics scene. 🔥

Do you already know the secrets of ‘Alone’? 🤐

What if you woke up one morning to find that all the adults – and almost all the other children – had disappeared? Five young people in the comic series ‘Alone’ find themselves in this situation: suddenly, the whole city is deserted and they’re on their own.

What has happened? You’ll find out as you go along in the comic series and in our exhibition “Alone. Not even scared (to be scared!)”. You can also read all the “Alone” series at the Comic Art Museum. Will you do that after your visit to the exhibition or before? The choice is yours! ☠
