🚚📚 A valuable acquisition for the MIM!

On June 17, the professional archives of Jean Tournay (1940–2015) officially joined the museum’s collections. Renowned as a harpsichord and clavichord maker, independent researcher, and MIM collaborator in the 1980s, Tournay dedicated much of his career to the study of historical keyboard instruments.

Rediscovered in his former workshop in Noville-les-Bois through the research of Pascale Vandervellen, curator at the MIM, this exceptional archive brings together several decades of documentation devoted to historical keyboard instruments: research notes, photographs, instrument plans, professional correspondence, and many other documents of great scientific value.

Thanks to the generous donation of Ms. Etsuko Kobori and the Kaszer family, this collection can now be preserved, studied, and further developed within the future Jean Tournay Fund.

Le mercredi 17 juin, les archives professionnelles de Jean Tournay (1940-2015), facteur de clavecins et de clavicordes, chercheur indépendant et collaborateur du MIM dans les années 1980, ont rejoint les collections documentaires du musée.

Retrouvé dans son ancien atelier à Noville-les-Bois grâce aux recherches de Pascale Vandervellen, conservatrice au MIM, ce fonds exceptionnel rassemble plusieurs décennies de documentation consacrée aux instruments à clavier anciens : notes de recherche, photographies, plans d'instruments, correspondances professionnelles et bien d'autres documents d'une grande valeur scientifique.

Grâce à la généreuse donation de Mme Etsuko Kobori et de la famille Kaszer, cet ensemble pourra désormais être préservé, étudié et valorisé au sein du futur Fonds Jean Tournay.

Op 17 juni werden de collecties van het MIM verrijkt met de archieven van Jean Tournay (1940–2015), bouwer van klavecimbels en clavichords, onafhankelijk onderzoeker en medewerker van het museum in de jaren 1980.

Dankzij het speurwerk van Pascale Vandervellen, conservator bij het MIM, werden de archieven teruggevonden in zijn voormalige atelier in Noville-les-Bois. Dit uitzonderlijke fonds omvat tientallen jaren aan documentatie over historische toetsinstrumenten: onderzoeksnotities, foto’s, instrumentenplannen, professionele correspondentie en tal van andere waardevolle bronnen van grote wetenschappelijke betekenis.

Dankzij de genereuze schenking van mevrouw Etsuko Kobori en de familie Kaszer krijgt dit bijzondere archief een duurzame toekomst binnen het Jean Tournay Fonds, waar het kan worden bewaard, bestudeerd en gedeeld.

Today, MIM celebrates its 26th anniversary! 🎂🎶

Exactly 26 years ago, the museum opened its doors on Mont des Arts. Since then, generations of visitors have explored its collections, listened to the sounds of instruments from every corner of the world, and discovered this iconic building, which has been home to MIM for many years.

Following the celebrations of its 25th anniversary last year, the museum marks this new milestone by sharing a selection of photographs of its galleries taken in 2025.

A heartfelt thank you to everyone who helps bring MIM to life: visitors, staff, volunteers, donors, partners, and friends of the museum.

🎺 This month, the MIM highlights a Mangbetu ivory horn known as a nambrose.

Carved between 1915 and 1930 from an elephant tusk, this instrument reflects the central role of music in the court life of the Mangbetu people in what is now the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

These horns were used to announce important events and signal the authority of the chief. At the same time, they were admired for their powerful sound, capable of evoking both human voices and natural forces.

Beyond its aesthetic qualities, the instrument also tells a broader story of early 20th-century encounters between Central Africa and Europe, when new artistic forms emerged in response to changing audiences and collecting practices.

Le MIM participe au concours “Chef-d’œuvre de l’Année” de museumPASSmusées avec un instrument aussi rare que fascinant : le piano-luthéal 🎹

Inventé en 1919 par le Belge Georges Cloetens, cet étonnant instrument transforme le son du piano et peut faire entendre des sonorités de clavecin, de harpe, de luth ou même de cymbalum.

🎼 Maurice Ravel l’a utilisé pour ses couleurs sonores uniques. Plus récemment, le piano-luthéal du MIM a résonné au Palais royal lors du concert de printemps, diffusé par la RTBF, une occasion exceptionnelle de redécouvrir cet instrument en action.
