“THE DANCER” - Affortunato Gory

Poised in a moment of fluid movement, this elegant Art Deco dancer by Affortunato Gory perfectly captures the spirit of the 1920s.

Her short hair adorned with flowers, the rhythmic silhouette, and the subtle interplay between white Carrara marble and gilded bronze evoke the glamour and modernity of the era, recalling the world of Josephine Baker and Parisian cabarets.

The refinement of the carving, combined with the contrast of materials, reveals Gory’s exceptional craftsmanship.

The work rests on a rare Portoro marble base, prized since antiquity for its deep black tones and golden veining.

One of the most celebrated sculptors of the Art Deco period, Gory became known for his graceful dancing figures and his masterful use of marble, bronze, and ivory.

Dimensions: 52 × 16.5 × 24.5 cm
Materials: White Carrara marble, gilded bronze, Portoro marble base

WOMAN & CHILD” - Pierre Traverse, ca. 1930

“Woman & Child” captures an intimate moment of maternal tenderness through simplified, harmonious art deco lines. The mother bends protectively toward the child clinging to her neck, their bodies linked by a soft vertical drapery that structures the composition with perfect balance.

Traverse’s sculptural language is both modern and restrained: smooth surfaces, softened lines, and a dark brown-green patina subtly warmed by golden highlights.

Stamped by the renowned Parisian foundry Lastele, this early bronze edition reflects the refined craftsmanship of the finest Art Deco ateliers.

Dimensions: 55 × 69 × 24 cm
Material: Dark patinated bronze

VENUS & CUPID - Mathurin Moreau, ca. 1890

Venus lifts Cupid in a light, graceful movement, the composition unfolding in a soft, upward curve. The child rests easily in her hands, creating a quiet sense of intimacy and balance.

The carving is remarkably precise: delicate hands, refined features, finely worked wings, and drapery that follows the body with natural ease. At the base, two doves nestled in the vegetation subtly echo the theme of love.

Better known in bronze, this marble version stands out for its finesse and gracious presence.

BUST OF VICTORIA, PRINCESS ROYAL - Guillaume Geefs, 1841

This finely carved Carrara marble bust depicts the young Victoria, Princess Royal, at just one year old. The delicacy of the features, the softness of the expression, and the precision of the details - from the pearls to the embroidered tunic - reveal exceptional mastery.

Created by Guillaume Geefs, court sculptor to King Leopold I, this work reflects the close ties between the Belgian and British royal families. The likeness is reinforced by contemporary painted portraits, confirming the identity of the young princess.

A rare and refined example of 19th-century royal sculpture, combining technical virtuosity with historical significance.

Dimensions: 49 × 15.5 × 15.5 cm
Signature: “Gme Geefs, statuaire de S.M. le Roi des Belges Brux. 1841”

“BACCHANAL VASE” - Godefroid Devreese, c. 1920 (model 1893)

This striking Carrara marble vase is entirely animated by a swirling Bacchic procession. Fauns, bacchantes, children, and vine branches intertwine in a continuous movement that wraps around the form, creating a sense of rhythm and vitality. The figures emerge seamlessly from the surface, their gestures fluid and interconnected, with no clear beginning or end.

Devreese’s mastery lies in this unity between form and decoration: the relief follows the curvature of the vase, while the organic handles grow naturally from the composition.

A key work within the artist’s oeuvre, this model marks an important stage in the evolution of a composition that would later reach monumental scale.

Dimensions: 88 × 40 × 37 cm
Signature: G. Devreese

“NIL VIRTUTI INVIUM” - HENRI GAUQUIE (1858–1927)

A powerful work capturing a male figure bound by rope, frozen in a moment of intense struggle. The tension of the body is rendered with striking precision, conveying both physical restraint and inner strength.

The title Nil Virtuti Invium, “Nothing is impossible to vertue”, reinforces the meaning of the scene: a meditation on resilience, willpower, and the human capacity to overcome adversity. A vivid expression of effort and determination.

Dimensions: 90 × 59.5 × 30.5 cm
Material: White Carrara marble

MASACCIO - MANUEL GARRIGA,1870.

At 1.30 metres high, this white marble sculpture stands out for its remarkable level of detail. The finely carved Renaissance garments, the delicate hands, and the sheet depicting *The Tribute Money* reveal a sculptor deeply engaged with both material and meaning.

Garriga presents Masaccio as a thoughtful, modern artist, with a precision that brings the marble vividly to life.

Created by a young Spanish sculptor whose career quickly faded from record, this work - awarded at the Turin Exhibition of 1870 - remains a rare and powerful testament to a talent that disappeared too soon.

Material: White Carrara Marble
Provenance: Private collection, Parma, Italy.
