Gregg Baker Asian Art

Gregg Baker Asian Art Gregg Baker Asian Art carries one of the largest collections of Japanese screens in Europe, Buddhist

Established in Mayfair in 1985, and on Kensington Church Street, London, the gallery is now located in Brussels, Belgium. The gallery focuses on antique Japanese paper screens with the largest stock in Europe. Our works of art range from metalwork, in the form of flower vessels and sculpture, to lacquer ware, cloisonné, scrolls, scholar's objects and Buddhist sculpture not only from Japan but also

selected works from China and Korea. We have been a strong supporter of Asian Art in London since its inception in 1997, holding a themed exhibition in the autumn of each year. In an effort to raise awareness of Japanese art, we give gallery talks to clients and to students from both SOAS and the British Museum which is always a great pleasure. We have been instrumental in advising and building collections for clients and supplying additions to the collections of museums in Great Britain, the Netherlands and the U.S.A.

"Looking at one of my paintings is for me like entering a traditional Shinto shrine. Because they are both so simple and symmetrical, the impact is very powerful. I am not a believer, but some people would call this experience “spiritual.”

Watanabe Shiko often drew from nature and painted birds and flowers in a realistic representation, which was combined with decorative and stylised features, producing a unique and fresh Rimpa style.
In the realm of meisho-e (pictures of famous scenic places), the portrayal of a large full moon or sun viewed through autumnal grasses represents Musashino (the Musashi plain).
The plain of Musashi was a large flat expanse of land west of Edo, most famous for the illusion of the moon rising straight out of the grasses and similarly the sun appeared at its largest size and deepest shade of red just before setting into the horizon.

Here is a detail of the signature and seal of Watanabe Shikō (1683-1755)

Watanabe Shiko (artist name: Kyuma) (1683-1755) is a painter who was born in Kyoto and active in the mid-Edo period (1603-1867). In his career, he practiced various modes of paintings in parallel – Kano-School style and traditional Japanese Yamato-e paintings as well as more decorative Rimpa style paintings. His oeuvre therefore is eclectic, yet Watanabe Shiko is generally categorised as a Rimpa-School artist since he is considered to have studied under Ogata Korin (1658-1716), one of the pioneering artists of the School, and many Rimpa style works of the artist are known today. He often drew from nature and painted birds and flowers in a realistic representation, which was combined with decorative and stylised features, producing a unique and fresh Rimpa style.
