Octavian, SEPT’s Artist Liaison, joins Ulla Hase in her studio for a closer look at her drawing practice. Born in Germany, Hase recently joined the gallery’s programme.

Working with a roller pen, Hase builds her drawings through the accumulation of lines. Repeated gestures produce dense fields of colour, shaped by subtle changes in pressure, direction and rhythm. Across the surface, the movement of the hand becomes a record of time.

Seen from a distance, the drawings hold a sense of depth and continuity. Up close, that image opens into individual marks, crossings and interruptions. Each work develops through this exchange between a sustained gesture and the variations it produces.

SEPT welcomes Melisa Maria Tatar (b. 1996, Bucharest) to its programme, opening a new perspective on contemporary figurative painting.

Based in Berlin, Tatar paints bodies that overlap, intertwine and lose their individual boundaries. Bold colour and supple contours give these encounters a physical intensity, where intimacy can become tension and separate figures gather into a single form.

Working with diluted acrylic and ink on unprimed canvas, Tatar builds her paintings through successive layers of colour that pe*****te the fabric. Her figures remain free of fixed identities or specific narratives, allowing gesture and proximity to carry their meaning. Her arrival reflects our commitment to a new generation of artists expanding the possibilities of the human figure.

SEPT is pleased to announce its representation of German artist Ulla Hase, whose practice expands the possibilities of contemporary drawing through a sustained exploration of line, repetition and works on paper.

Working primarily with pen and paper, Hase constructs densely articulated fields in which individual marks accumulate, intersect and shift across the surface. Line is treated not simply as a means of description, but as a material in itself - capable of generating rhythm, depth and movement. Her compositions unfold gradually, balancing exactitude with perceptual instability.

To mark the beginning of this new chapter, SEPT will present a focused selection of works by Ulla Hase at Art on Paper Brussels. Bringing together works spanning several years of her practice, the presentation introduces her distinctive visual language to the gallery’s programme and situates it within SEPT’s wider commitment to abstraction, material intelligence and process.

For its return to Art on Paper Brussels, SEPT presents a focused selection of works by South Korean artist Lee Hyun Joung, celebrating nearly a decade of collaboration between the artist and the gallery. It marks SEPT’s first devoted presentation of her work in Belgium since the gallery’s previous participation in the fair.

Created with handmade Hanji paper, Korean ink and natural pigments, the selected works will be shown to the Belgian public for the first time. Together, they trace the evolution of Lee Hyun Joung’s distinctive language, in which line, material and repetition give physical form to memory, landscape and time.

SEPT | ONE WORK

A recurring series in which a member of the gallery reflects on an artwork that continues to shape their way of seeing.

In this edition, SEPT founder Florian Araïb reflects on Reflet by South Korean artist Kwang Bum Jang.

“What holds my attention in Reflet is the tension between accumulation and removal. For hundreds of days, Kwang applies one layer of paint after another, allowing time to become physically embedded within the work. He then sands and polishes the surface, gradually revealing the colours, rhythms and movements held beneath it.

The red lines appear to vibrate and shift as you move in front of the painting. Yet their intensity comes from what has been removed rather than what has been added. Reflet expresses something essential to Kwang’s practice: sometimes, to reach the core of an artwork, the artist must know when to stop adding and begin taking away.”

For Paris, Séoul, SEPT presents a focused selection of works by Kwang Bum Jang, whose paintings are formed through an extended process of accumulation. Over hundreds of days, the artist returns to the canvas daily, applying one layer after another until time itself becomes embedded within the surface. Colour and material gather into a dense archive of repeated gestures, concealing as much as they contain.

Only then does Jang begin to sand and polish the work, gradually removing what he has so patiently constructed. This final act reveals forms, depths and fragments buried within the accumulated layers. His process suggests that reaching the essence of an image requires more than adding: it demands the precision and courage to take away.

SEPT | ONE WORK

A recurring series in which a member of the gallery reflects on an artwork that continues to shape their way of seeing.

For this edition, SEPT Director Arthur Beaude selects Shine On You Crazy Diamond by Joana Schneider.

Constructed from marine rope, the work extends Schneider’s investigation into material, labour and transformation. Coiled lengths accumulate into a surface that shifts between image and object, its symmetry suggesting a face, an anatomical structure or a map without settling into a single reading.

The work was included in Schneider’s major solo presentation at the Groninger Museum and has since entered a private collection.
For Beaude, its force lies in this transformation: a material defined by movement, tension and use assumes a presence that is precise, intimate and monumental.

From the Osh to the Universe, Johann Alexis’ solo exhibition at SEPT Knokke, marks a defining step in the artist’s career. Years of investigation into landscape, colour, line, and reduction have developed into an increasingly assured language - one that moves between recognition and abstraction while remaining distinctly his own.

For Alexis, the exhibition represents both a culmination and a departure: a new body of work, but also a broader statement of where his practice stands today and where it is heading. In this short conversation, the artist reflects on the ideas behind From the Osh to the Universe and the evolution that brought him to this point.

Lee Hyun Joung explores line as a physical trace of movement, time, and memory. Working directly on handmade Hanji, the artist builds the composition through an intensely physical process: the movement of her hand, arm, and body is carried across the surface in long, repeated gestures.

No single line defines the image. Instead, thousands of marks accumulate, intersect, and dissolve, producing shifting fields of density that appear at once controlled and in constant motion. The irregular surface of the Hanji becomes integral to this process, resisting and absorbing the gesture as it passes across the paper.
