Please Be a Good Neighbour
Colin Waeghe
Stief DeSmet

On view until 20 June.

In ‘Please Be a Good Neighbour’, Colin Waeghe and Stief DeSmet move alongside one another like neighbours who subtly reshape each other’s worlds without ever fully crossing into them.
Waeghe creates quiet landscapes of concealment and stillness — hedges, houses and surfaces that hint at a world slowly shifting beneath itself. DeSmet approaches nature as something reconstructed and remembered: fleeting images suspended between recognition and disappearance.

During Art Antwerp Weekend, Stefan Peters presents VISTAS ARCUS, a new body of work within his ongoing VISTAS series, as part of the exhibition INSIDE/OUTSIDE. THE HOUSE AS A SHELL at Studio Nils Verkaeren.

INSIDE/OUTSIDE. THE HOUSE AS A SHELL
Free entrance — 14 May – 17 May, 12:00–18:00
Studio Nils Verkaeren
Jodenstraat 12, Antwerp

Within the VISTAS series, Peters explores the relationship between landscape, perception and the material language of painting. Rather than depicting existing places, the works evoke imagined or mental landscapes through layered brushstrokes, subtle colour gradations and shifting atmospheres.
For VISTAS ARCUS, Peters introduces a new format with a rounded upper edge, subtly recalling architectural arches, devotional panels or window-like openings. The shape enhances the sensation of looking into — rather than simply looking at — an image.
Balancing illusion and materiality, the paintings shift between cinematic spatial impressions from afar and autonomous painterly gestures up close. With VISTAS ARCUS, Peters further expands his exploration of image-making and the contemplative potential of painting.

Today marks the start of the Art Antwerp Weekend. For the occasion, the gallery settles into the back house of Antwerp-based artist Nils Verkaeren for the group exhibition INSIDE/OUTSIDE. The House as a Shell.

Tonight, from 18:00 to 21:00, Peter Lagast — performing under his alter ego DJ De La Ghost — presents a DJ set that unfolds as both a visual and auditory performance. After graduating from the painting department of St-Lucas Ghent in 1995, Lagast developed a multifaceted artistic practice centered around drawing, painting, travel and sculptural experimentation. In recent years, his work has increasingly focused on layering paint onto existing imagery, particularly vintage record sleeves.

During the performance, these transformed vinyl records become both source material and visual protagonists. As DJ De La Ghost plays the records, their covers continuously appear and disappear, creating a playful dialogue between sound and image. Much like in his paintings, fragments, details and visual references emerge, dissolve and recombine — echoing the visual logic of today’s swipe culture, where images and associations constantly overlap.

The DJ set becomes an extension of Lagast’s artistic practice: a performative collage in which music, record sleeves and painterly interventions merge into an open field of associations, inviting the audience to construct their own narratives between what they hear and what they see.

PLEASE BE A GOOD NEIGHBOUR
Colin Waeghe & Stief DeSmet
10 May — 20 June
Opening: Sunday 10 May, 14-18u (in presence of the artists)

In the exhibition ‘Please Be a Good Neighbour’, Colin Waeghe and Stief DeSmet move alongside one another like neighbours who never quite enter each other’s territory, yet subtly alter it. Waeghe’s work unfolds like a quiet landscape of concealment and stillness, where hedges, houses and surfaces suggest a world gently shifting underneath itself. DeSmet approaches nature as something reassembled and remembered — images in motion, always balancing between recognition and disappearance.

A warm welcome to the opening of 'Please Be a Good Neighbour', a duo exhibition by Colin Waeghe & Stief DeSmet, on Sunday May 10 from 2 PM to 6 PM, in the presence of the artists.

In 'Please Be a Good Neighbour', Colin Waeghe and Stief DeSmet move alongside one another like neighbours who never fully enter each other’s territory, yet subtly influence it. Waeghe’s work unfolds as a quiet landscape of concealment and stillness, where hedges, houses, and surfaces suggest a world gently shifting beneath itself. DeSmet approaches nature as something continuously reassembled and remembered — images in motion, constantly balancing between recognition and disappearance.
