This exceptional masterpiece, which was dismantled in the 1960s, has been brought back to life in the museum after careful restoration. The remarkable mosaic floor is particularly eye-catching, as it was reconstructed using Italian marble following the original techniques.

160 years Japan-Belgium 🇯🇵 🤝🇧🇪

To celebrate the friendship and partnership between Japan and Belgium, a few of our cherished museum pieces are heading to Japan for an exhibition at the Kokugakuin University Museum. As a federal museum, we are delighted to contribute in this way to cultural diplomacy between our country and Japan!

👀 Amongst other items, this magnificent vase and document box – once generous gifts from Emperor Meiji at the opening of the first exhibition in the Japanese Tower in Brussels – will be on loan. The gold-coloured document box, finished in kinji lacquer, features both flat and relief lacquer techniques and is adorned with flowers from all four seasons. It took no less than 45 months for artisan craftsmen from various disciplines to create this box.

🧐 This cobalt-blue porcelain vase, on the other hand, is the work of Imperial Household artist Miyagawa (Makuzu) Kōzan. It features a monochrome design of chrysanthemums, rendered using the characteristic shading technique (bokashi) with which Kōzan was able to suggest volume and depth.

💡 After 160 years, this and a dozen other masterpieces are leaving Belgium for the first time to be exhibited to the Japanese public!

📣 From this May onwards, you can visit the museum for FREE every first Wednesday afternoon of the month after 1 p.m.! What better time to have a look around and be transported to past eras and cultures! And who knows, perhaps you'll visit again for a guided tour, a birthday party with your (grand)child, or a unique temporary exhibition. All are welcome!

🏆 Le Musée Art & Histoire participe au concours “Chef-d’œuvre de l’Année”, organisé par museumPASSmusées, avec un joyau de l’Art nouveau belge 👇

✨ Au cœur du musée, le jardin d’hiver Cousin de Victor Horta renaît comme un véritable chef-d’œuvre. Démantelé dans les années 1960, cet ensemble exceptionnel réapparaît grâce à une restauration minutieuse, avec un spectaculaire sol en mosaïque recréé à partir de marbres italiens selon les techniques d’origine.

🎼 Présenté dans les nouvelles salles Art nouveau et Art déco inaugurées en 2025, ce joyau longtemps caché témoigne du génie créatif et du savoir-faire artisanal d’une époque. Plus qu’un objet, le jardin d’hiver Cousin est une immersion dans l’élégance et l’innovation de la Belgique fin-de-siècle.
