Hieroglyphs aren't just ancient art – they're a 3,000-year-old writing system✍️

What are they?
The word comes from Greek meaning "holy writings". Ancient Egyptians believed this language was invented by the gods themselves. Over 700 different symbols were used – pictures of living creatures, everyday objects, and symbols.

How do they work?
Some symbols stand for whole words, others represent sounds – like the owl symbol that makes an "m" sound. And unlike our alphabet, hieroglyphs could be written vertically, horizontally, left to right, or right to left. Egyptians even believed that if your name was remembered, you would survive in the afterlife – which is why pharaohs' names were written in hieroglyphs inside their tombs.

Have you ever noticed the 12 baboons silently watching from the walls of Tutankhamun's burial chamber? 🐒👑

On the western wall of the burial chamber, 12 painted baboons march across the surface. They are not mere decoration – they are guardians of the night, each one representing an hour of darkness that the pharaoh had to pass through on his journey into the afterlife.

These baboons are depicted in a scene from the Book of Amduat – the ancient Egyptian guide to the underworld. As the sun travels through the 12 hours of night before its rebirth at dawn, the pharaoh must navigate this perilous passage. The baboons were believed to possess protective and guiding powers for the deceased ruler.

Their presence on the walls tells a powerful story: Tutankhamun was not simply buried – he was prepared for an epic journey through the underworld, hour by hour, guarded by these mystical creatures.

Next time you visit the exhibition, take a moment to look for them. They have been watching for over 3,300 years. ✨

In ancient Egypt, that meant only one thing: the chaos serpent Apep was winning his daily battle against the sun god Ra.

The Egyptians believed Apep, a giant serpent of evil and chaos, would try to swallow Ra as he sailed his golden barge across the sky. On normal days, Ra won. On eclipse days? Let's just say the serpent got lucky.

So when you look up at the solar eclipse, remember: you're witnessing a 3,000-year-old cosmic battle.
