BADAFF - JONAS VANDERBEKE - TERRA INCOGNITA
Jonas Vanderbeke moves fluidly between figuration and abstraction, with flowers as a recurring motif — not as decoration, but as a vehicle for color, form, and layered symbolism.
His process begins digitally. From an ever-growing archive of found images — sourced from the internet, books, films, and old documents — he builds collages that he then transfers meticulously onto canvas, combining oil paint with charcoal. Smooth, boldly colored brushwork alternates with delicate drawn lines, creating a tension between the lush and the fragile. Once the composition is set, he does not deviate from it.
What appears abstract at first glance reveals, on closer inspection, a world of hidden figures and symbolism. His bouquets are not narrative — they overwhelm before they seduce.
Born in 1993 and based in Ghent, Vanderbeke holds a Master’s degree in Fine Arts from KASK. Beyond the canvas, his work extends into the public realm, including a large-scale floor painting on the market square of Wetteren and neighborhood flags in the Brugse Poort district of Ghent.
