We are pleased to welcome Professor Freddy Decreus for the closing event of People Ruin Paintings on April 25.

A classical philologist and scholar at the Ghent University, Decreus has dedicated much of his work to theatre history, ritual performance, mythology, and the contemporary reinterpretation of classical forms.

His presence brings a unique perspective to the evening’s discussion on ritual, performance, and the instability of image-making today.

Kashi Rupé - Unfolding

I’ve been making collages from a whole series of photos — around 300 by now. The combinations are very inspiring, and that’s one direction I’m working in.

The second direction comes from a newspaper I found on the train from Delhi to Varanasi — pages filled with missing people. The images are very grainy, almost unrecognizable, but very powerful as a starting point for painting.

And the third part is working with the students — developing sculptures together with Sofie. We’ve been given a new space to work in, which is quite raw, so we need to build everything from scratch. It’s a real challenge, but also an opportunity to create an exchange with the students and develop new ideas together.

This body of work will be presented in
