Summer Course for the Study of the Arts in Flanders

Summer Course for the Study of the Arts in Flanders An intensive 10-day program of lectures, discussions, and visits for young researchers. Apply now through November 30, 2015.

The Summer course for the Study of the Arts in Flanders is an intensive 10-day program of lectures, discussions, and visits for young researchers. The Summer Course is a joint initiative of the Flemish Art Collection, the Royal Museum of Fine Arts Antwerp, the Groeninge Museum Bruges, the University of Ghent, the Catholic University of Louvain, the Rubenianum and the Flemish Research Center for th

e Arts in the Burgundian Netherlands. The aim of the Summer Course is to bring to Flanders, annually, a group of 18 select national and international, highly qualified young researchers and to present them with an intensive 10-day program of lectures, discussions, and visits related to the specific course theme within Flemish art. This theme will vary annually and will focus each year on a different art-historical period. The aim is to provide the participants with a clear insight into the Flemish art collections from the period at hand, as well as into the available and most suited research methods, the state of the research and the research needs. Ideally, the speakers will incorporate or allude to topics that will be treated in other lectures. We expect active participation from the participants, and therefore the discussion following each lecture will form an essential part of the program. The first edition of the summer course was titled “The age of van Eyck in context” and took place from June 21 through July 1 2015. Its content was coordinated by Musea Brugge and the Flemish Research Centre for the Arts in the Burgundian Netherlands. The second edition is titled 'The age of Rubens in context' and takes place from June 19 through June 29, 2016. The content is coordinated by the Rubenianum and the Royal Museum of Fine Arts in Antwerp. Thanks to the generous support of the Flemish Government the participation fee of the Summer Course is now fixed at €900 per person. The fee includes the full 11-day programme, 10 overnight hotel stays (Antwerp) in a single-occupancy room, all transportation within the programme, all entry tickets, 2 receptions, 4 dinners and 6 lunches. To facilitate students with limited financial means the organisation of the Summer Course for the Study of the Arts in Flanders together with the Flemish Government has made available two grants of €450 each. These grants will be awarded (preferably) to one European and one non-European applicant of the Summer Course. The recipients of the grant will pay a reduced participation fee of €450 instead of the regular fee. Applicants will be informed of the outcome of the selection process in early December.
