Brigitte Stahl (b. 1964, Stuttgart) takes found, discarded objects and materials (objets trouvés) as the starting point for her work. Stripped of their original function, these objects are subjected to an intensive process of deconstruction and transformation. They are taken apart, processed, and subsequently reassembled into autonomous sculptures.
In this creative process, diverse material properties and colors—often in extreme contrast to one another—play a crucial role. Stahl connects, interweaves, knots, wraps, and squashes the materials to arrive at entirely new, unexpected structures. The results possess a mysterious, fragmented aura and an elusive poetry.
A common thread running through Stahl’s oeuvre is the concept of ‘folding,’ with its inherent ambivalence of revealing and concealing. In her most recent works, the artist combines textiles, fabrics, wood, concrete, and clay. The individual works not only relate to the surrounding space but also interact strongly with one another.
