A complete overview of installation views from Cruel Summer, Willehad Eilers’ first exhibition in Knokke, currently on view at Buysse Gallery.

The exhibition brings together a new body of work shaped by the heightened atmosphere of the seaside, where desire, excess, and expectation continuously overlap.

Throughout the exhibition, paintings, drawings, and installations unfold as observations of contemporary life. Familiar situations are pushed toward distortion, allowing humor and unease, pleasure and uncertainty, to occupy the same space.

One of the central works, Come with me (2026), is described by Eilers as follows:

“You wake, open your eyes, and a shadow is leaning above you. Caring. Slowly your eyes adjust. With a warm deep voice he asks you to come with him. You light a few of your filter ci******es and consider this proposition.

Later you dance through the flowers into the horizon.”

Like much of Eilers’ practice, the work resists clear resolution. Instead, it inhabits the space between attraction and doubt, inviting viewers to navigate the unstable terrain of contemporary desire.

An overview of Cruel Summer, Willehad Eilers’ first exhibition in Knokke.

Across painting, drawing, and installation, Eilers constructs scenes in which contemporary life appears both familiar and unstable. Exaggerated figures, compressed spaces, and saturated surfaces become vehicles for observing desire, excess, distraction, and the rituals that shape everyday existence.

Rather than offering answers, these works hold a mirror to the contradictions of the present. Humor and unease coexist. Pleasure and discomfort overlap. What initially appears playful gradually reveals a more complex condition.

THE LIFE AND DEATH OF LIFE AND DEATH

“Various attempts at escaping the unanswerable question: what happens after death. We are scared, loud, violent, and unbearable. As a mass. As individuals lost in a search for trust. Something to hold onto.

Religion, material success, dominance, intellect, anything to create the illusion of defeating time. All distraction. All bound to fail. All relatable.

The headless chicken is running.”

A series of ink drawings by Willehad Eilers presented in a triptych configuration.

As Willehad Eilers notes: “Moments in time. Wishes in combination with the harsh truth. Like in the old Batman series, the tilted horizon indicates that we are at a breaking point.”

While each work functions as an autonomous composition, the grouping establishes a continuous visual rhythm. Linear gestures unfold across the surfaces with immediacy, creating a dialogue between fragmentation and cohesion. This presentation reflects a broader unity within the body of work developed for Knokke, where individual scenes remain distinct yet interconnected through their shared language of line and perception.

Exterior view of Cruel Summer at Buysse Gallery.
On view is The Sirens (2026) by Willehad Eilers (b. 1981), measuring 150 × 200 × 3 cm. The work is visible from the street 24/7, with evening hours offering a heightened perception of its color and surface.

The painting is presented on the occasion of Eilers’ first exhibition in Knokke. The artist describes the work as follows:
“Unlike in the story of Odysseus, the Sirens in this painting are not bound to an island. They themselves are out on the hunt. Scanning the sea from a boat loaded with drugs and treats. Your desire is out there, ready to put you down.”

Exhibition view of the current solo exhibition by Willehad Eilers.

This frontal view centers on Unter der Kutsche, a work described by the artist as: “Under the carriage. All perspective is lost. The viewer is overrun by the contents of the painting. There is no logical perspective to cling to. We are in between the wheels and witness the madness we desired marching over our heads.”

Surrounding the central painting, a series of ink drawings unfolds along the walls. Their linear and direct quality establishes a measured dialogue with the density of the painting. Together, they form a balanced curatorial composition in which immediacy and accumulation coexist, allowing shifts in perception between clarity and saturation.
