"Servranckx, the friend with the joyful heart, the frank gaze. I tell you, one day Servranckx will be greater than me and his works will be more valuable than mine." James Ensor

In the early 1920s, Servranckx sought a synthesis between the pure geometry of constructive art and a fascination with the mechanical world: machines, industrial volumes and the dynamics of movement are here reduced to their most essential form. “Opus 58” stands out for its perfect mastery of tension and balance. The canvas embodies the artistic ambition of this period: a belief in progress, formal purity, and the aesthetic of the industrial age.

Lot 127 - Victor Servranckx – Opus 58 (1923)
Oil on canvas – Sig. “SERVRANCKX 1923” – 38,5 x 47 cm

Drawn by the allure of sun-drenched landscapes and crystalline light, Théo Van Rysselberghe travelled to the South of France. The vivid hues, the shimmering Mediterranean atmosphere, and the poetic charm of the region deeply inspired him.

"Les rochers rouges au Trayas (Estérel)" captures the overwhelming coastline of the seaside resort nestled between Saint-Tropez and Cannes. The jagged red rocks radiate the warmth of the sun, softened by a cooling bed of lush greenery. The landscape plunges dramatically into the water, whose gentle swaying brings calm to the composition. Land and sea, two opposites, create the balance that gives this magnificent painting its harmony.

Théo Van Rysselberghe - Les rochers rouges au Trayas (Estérel) (1904)
Oil on canvas – Monogram "VR 04" with dedication "à Lucien Bonnet / son ami" – 46 x 55 cm

Spring is in the air...

Coffee, anyone? With milk or sugar? Come closer, gather around this cozy table. Linger for a moment and enjoy the cool shade offered by the apple tree. It is sheer bliss to spend time in the garden on such a beautiful summer’s day. The green grass is lush and soft, sunbeams dance among the flowers, the branches are swollen with ripe fruit. All is well, so take a seat.

In 1901, De Smet settled in Sint-Martens-Latem, the painters' village along the river Lys. It was here that his unique interpretation of luminism unfolded. He became a prominent member of Vie et lumière, a group formed around 1904 by Emile Claus, Georges Morren, and Adriaan Jozef Heymans united by a shared ambition to “paint light” – an aim masterfully realized in "Garden Table" (ca. 1910).

THE MAN WHO MEASURES THE CLOUDS

The story behind this sculpture begins when Jan Fabre sees the film “Birdman of Alcatraz”. Robert Stroud, an inmate in the notorious prison, declares on his release that from this moment on he "will measure the clouds".

Fabre saw this as a "metaphor of the artist who tries to capture the impossible in his work". By extension, it depicts the impotence of man in his efforts to control the world. Behind the ruler, the clouds keep passing by.

Jan Fabre – The man who measures the clouds (1998)
Sculpture - Bronze - Polished
285 x 150 x 79 cm

This work is part of our upcoming auction on February 28th, 2026. Full catalogue will be online soon.
