« VIELS OF LIGHT »

« My paintings have an interdir and an exterior. The image is preserved beneath the surface. A thin, translucent membrane separates the fragile interior from the coarse skin shielding it. The scarred, pockmarked urethane skin acts as a protective barrier from the outside world. The works are a casting of the fragility of life, the fragility of feelings.

I wish the paintings to be an evocation of the sacred. Light and transparency are my tools. I draw with smoke and the pouring of urethane. A kind of abstract writing appears. The necessity of expressing these inchoate feelings leads me to invoking natural phenomena with translucent qualities: light, fog, steam, mist, clouds, water, sweat and ice. Like an undiscovered creature embedded in ice, the paintings offer a reveal. The practice is a form of writing without writing and painting without painting. » Jonathan Adolphe

Jonathan Adolphe (1952-2022)
was contemporary American
painter translucent works evoke the sacred, the fragility of emotions, and human ephemerality. His materials consisted of urethane, fiberglass, smoke, powdered pigment, and spray paint. Adolphe’s early works were a hybrid of painting and sculpture, employing materials such as wax, chalkboards, sand, and navy signal flags.

« My paintings have an interdir and an exterior. The image is preserved beneath the surface. A thin, translucent membrane separates the fragile interior from the coarse skin shielding it. « ARTE NUNZIO - Quinta do Pinhô Artists Residency 2026 ».

The exhibition will take place in the ANCIENNE NONCIATURE from the 25 to 27 September 2026, from 11 am to 7 pm during the BAS - BRUSSELS ART SQUARE, place du Grand Sablon in Brussels.

JÖRG BRÄUER & FRÉDÉRICK MOURAUX GALLERY

Jörg Bräuer was born in Germany (1966) and holds German and Belgian nationality.
Reflection on space and the alteration of matter over time forms the enduring foundation of Jörg Bräuer’s artistic research, which he expresses through different disciplines: photography, painting, text works, sculpture and installations. In his themes, which he chooses from among architecture and the essential elements of nature, he imbues his conceptual approach with a poetic vision of the little-known universes that surround us. With chromatic subtlety and graphic purity that border on abstraction, he lets us perceive the texture of time.

Curated by Anne Derasse and Hubert d’Ursel, this exhibition presents works created by six international contemporary artists during the Quinta do Pinhô Artists Residency in Portugal.

Exhibition until October 24th

For its inaugural exhibition, Mouraux Durand-Ruel Gallery is pleased to present a retrospective exhibition on Lucien Clergue, Written by the Sun, from September 23rd to October 24th at 555 West 25th Street in Chelsea. Bringing together forty black-and-white photographs made from the 1950s to the early 2000s, depicting the different worlds through which he constructed his photographic language: theater and memory, music and community, the effect of light and poetry on the human body. The exhibition takes its title from the Mediterranean light that shaped Lucien Clergue’s vision from his early Saltimbanques and the Gypsiespictures to the architectural series Brasília, his celebrated n**e photographs, and intimate portraits of Pablo Picasso and Jean Cocteau.

ABOUT LUCIEN CLERGUE
Lucien Clergue (1934-2014) received his first camera at thirteen and began photographing around his native Arles, turning his lens on the bullring, animal carcasses, and traveling performers in his Saltimbanques series. In 1953, at eighteen, he approached Pablo Picasso after a bullfight in Arles and showed him his photographs. Picasso, who rated him above Henri Cartier-Bresson, encouraged him to keep working, and Clergue went on to photograph him over nearly two decades. A collection of these photographs is now held by the Museu Picasso, Barcelona. Edward Steichen discovered Clergue’s work in 1958 and acquired nine prints for The Museum of Modern Art’s collection in 1960.
