Eighty one years after the end of WWII Indian Sikhs commemorated the sacrifice of theirs forebears who fought and died as part of the Eighth Indian Division that fought side by side with Scottish Highlanders troops to defeat N**i and Italian Fascist tyranny in the northern Apennine Mountains. The Indian Sikhs were part of a 50,000 Indian Army that also included soldiers from what is today Pakistan and Bangladesh. More than 5,000 Indian soldiers were killed fighting in Italy. The story of the Sikhs and their fellow soldiers from the sub-Asian continent is one that gets little or no recognition in most WWII history books. It also has been ignored in Indian history books because it happened before the country broke the colonial reins of the United Kingdom and became independent. Today more than 200,000 Sikhs, almost of whom immigrated to Italy starting in the 1990s but knew nothing of their forebears WWII sacrifice, play a key role in the agriculture, service and manufacturing sector of the Italian economy.

The Sikh ceremonies took place simultaneous to June 2 celebrations when Italians celebrated the 80th anniversary of a referendum that ended the Italian monarchy and established the Republic of Italy one year after the end of WWII.

🕊️ On May 26, 2026, Indian and Italian dignitaries commemorated the extraordinary contributions of Indian soldiers who helped liberate Italy and Europe from N**i Germany and Italian Fascism during World War II.

🎖️ A memorial was unveiled in honor of Sepoy Kamal Ram of the 8th Punjab Regiment of the Indian Army — recipient of the Victoria Cross, the United Kingdom’s highest military decoration for bravery.

⚔️ During the fierce battles of May 1944, Sepoy Kamal Ram displayed extraordinary courage at Monte Cassino, helping Allied Forces break through enemy lines and continue their advance toward the Gothic Line.

His bravery contributed to the eventual defeat of German and Italian Fascist forces in Italy one year later.
