" Em 1976, a Pesquisa Nacional por Amostra de Domicílios (PNAD )do IBGE inovou ao abrir a pergunta sobre cor ou raça, permitindo aos brasileiros se autoidentificarem livremente. Foram registrados cerca de 136 termos, mas 93,6% da população concentrou-se em seis categorias principais: branca, clara, morena-clara, morena, parda e preta. Mesmo após 50 anos, ainda há quem negue essa mistura. Não somos brancos. No branco cabem todas as cores."

A Jewelry Room 2026, parte da programação da Lisbon Jewellery Biennial, encerrou ontem.

Foram dias especiais de encontros, reencontros e descobertas em torno da joalheria contemporânea.

Agradecemos a todos que nos visitaram e aos joalheiros que deram forma a esta edição com suas criações.

A exposição termina, mas as peças seguem no nosso site.

"A joalheria em geral é minha paixão, e tenho muita sorte de poder criar todos os tipos de peças: desde joias artísticas mais conceituais e experimentais até peças personalizadas e cheias de significado que meus clientes usam no dia a dia. Todas as minhas peças são feitas à mão e raramente faço a mesma peça duas vezes.

Em termos de estilo, minhas peças costumam ter várias camadas e serem figurativas, e gosto de usar motivos associados à joalheria histórica que sejam abertamente sentimentais.

Geralmente trabalho com materiais preciosos — prata, ouro, diamantes, pérolas e outras pedras preciosas —, bem como com materiais menos tradicionais, como plásticos e marfim. O trabalho manual é muito importante para mim, e crio minhas peças utilizando técnicas tradicionais de ourivesaria."

Passages

Feeling the weight of thousands of beads and bugles on the body is also feeling the weight
of existence. The body does not merely perceive: it remembers, evokes, and dialogues with
what touches it.
Each piece is born from time suspended in the repetition of a gesture. Stitch after stitch,
hours and days condense into surfaces that grow with patience, memory, and presence.
Within them, the reverse of the weaving is also revealed: decisions, questions, process.
Where the work rests—on the stomach, the hips, the shoulder, the chest—the weight
awakens different emotions and shows us that to carry is not always to suffer, but also to
hold, to resist, to transform.
At the crossing of weight and time, an intimate language emerges: the fragile that protects,
the small that transforms. These pieces invite us to sustain existence with beauty,
recognizing that every burden—physical, emotional, or symbolic—can become a
transformative experience.

Stillness… Restlessness… Concern… Before a storm rises, the sea often appears deceptively calm.
Yet beneath the surface, forces and tensions begin to gather — and today, so do the consequences of human impact. Plastic, metal fragments and other waste form a second, artificial layer in the water. This human-made presence alters currents, endangers marine life, and forces nature into a strained form of coexistence, struggling against the excess of what we leave behind.
The pendant „Vor dem Sturm”, crafted from green glass and green fishing line, reflects this
condition. The glass evokes the transparency and vulnerability of water; the fishing line points to human use and the burden we impose on the environment. Inside, a small hook with a spinner acts as a deliberate signal — drawing attention to what remains hidden below the surface, accumulating until it becomes a „storm.”
In the spirit of Coexistences, the work reveals how humans and the sea coexist today: not only in harmony, but also in conflict, overlap and responsibility. The calm surface is misleading — beneath it, nature and human debris coexist, fragile ecosystems and industrial traces intertwined. The pendant makes this tension visible and reminds us that coexistence is always shaped by how we treat what we leave behind.

HAIR MANIFESTO

STATEMENT
Maria Ignacia Walker draws upon the technique of Mourning Jewelry to create
a series of works that, through hair —both her own and that of others—,
successively prolong and intertwine loss, death, trauma, and the spell. This
interweaving is not metaphorical: it is knotted, preserved in keratin, and
solidified in porcelain, gold, and silver. It is enduring, much like the visual shock
produced by the works as a whole.
In this particular series, SMALL MANIFESTATIONS, Walker moves away from
the anthropocentric. By bringing other realms into coexistence with hair, the
non-human, the animal, and the inverted take on the leading role. It is as if the
artist allows us to glimpse a second nature, one that is visible only for a few
seconds at night. This realm of two-headed creatures, eyes, shadows, and
barely recognizable figures, yet understood through an atavistic language, is
fixed in hair, pearls, and silver, like a photograph that provides evidence of the
existence of other beings.
What she proposes is a game beyond the city, an incursion into the forest as
the only method of finding, within extraordinary beings, an answer to horror.
This series is a journey in which the artist exposes us to objects found in other
realities that escape the ordinary: they are the future of survival and pain.
