Em “all fixed, fast-frozen”, Ilê Sartuzi utiliza esferas de gelo para reinterpretar o clássico truque de mágica conhecido como “cups and balls”. À medida que o mágico faz as bolinhas desaparecerem e reaparecerem diante da câmera, uma voz sussurra palavras que servem tanto para descrever a ação, quanto para evocar jargões do mercado financeiro.
Termos como inflation, bubble, burn rate, liquidity, freeze, melting, bet, burst e até mesmo a célebre frase de Karl Marx — “All that is solid melts into air” [Tudo que é sólido desmancha no ar] — criam camadas de significação, aproximando as dinâmicas do truque aos movimentos da especulação.
O trabalho também remete à ação icônica “Bliz-aard Ball Sale” (1983), de David Hammons, na qual o artista norte-americano vendeu bolas de neve nas ruas de Nova York em pleno inverno.
O vídeo integra a exposição “Contrato”, de Ilê Sartuzi, em cartaz na galeria Luisa Strina até 13 de fevereiro.

In “all fixed, fast-frozen”, Ilê Sartuzi uses ice to reinterpret the classic magic trick known as “cups and balls.” As the magician makes the small spheres disappear and reappear before the camera, a voice whispers words that serve both to describe the action and to evoke the jargon of the financial market.
Terms such as inflation, bubble, burn rate, liquidity, freeze, melting, bet, and burst — as well as Karl Marx’s famous phrase, “All that is solid melts into air” — create overlapping layers of meaning, linking the dynamics of illusion to those of speculation.
The work also references “Bliz-aard Ball Sale” (1983), the iconic performance by David Hammons in which the American artist sold snowballs on the streets of New York in winter.
The video is part of Ilê Sartuzi’s exhibition “Contrato,” on view at Luisa Strina through February 13.
