National Art Gallery of The Bahamas

National Art Gallery of The Bahamas NAGB is an art museum collecting, preserving, exhibiting, and interpreting historic and contemporary Bahamian art. In 1996, Prime Minister Hubert A.

Established by an Act of Parliament, the National Art Gallery of The Bahamas is the first institution of its kind in the history of The Bahamas. Ingraham first announced the establishment of The National Art Gallery as part of an expanded system of museums. The Government’s initiative to support a national art gallery reflects an understanding of how such institutions assist in nation-building. It

represents a vision that a national art gallery can be a place for Bahamians to view an important aspect of their culture. It also anticipates that the National Art Gallery will become a showpiece for tourism - a place where visitors from abroad can view the finest Bahamian artwork. After considering various locations, the National Art Gallery of The Bahamas was invited to occupy Villa Doyle, a period building dating back to the 1860s. Because of its history, location and beauty, there can be few sites more fitting to house the National Art Gallery of The Bahamas than this building. Completed in the 1860s, its owner Sir William Doyle was Chief Justice of The Bahamas and the first Bahamian to be knighted. After the addition of a ballroom in the 1920s, it became one of Nassau’s stately homes and a prized location for local entertainment. Positioned on the rise overlooking the top of West Street, Villa Doyle is typical of great houses of earlier centuries with balconies that offer a commanding view of the city and the sea. It is located in the heart of historic “Old Nassau” and is within easy walking distance of Nassau’s main commercial district. Villa Doyle’s restoration took almost seven years to complete involving a dedicated team of professionals and consultants under the supervision of architect Anthony Jervis and the National Art Gallery’s Committee chaired by Dr Gail Saunders. Because of the time taken to complete the restoration and transformation of Villa Doyle, the National Art Gallery now boasts museum-grade lighting, and climate, fire and security controls, which are on par with similar galleries internationally.

Now on view | The Gaulin Woman: Uncovering Our Bahamian Selves

NAGB is proud to present The Gaulin Woman: Uncovering Our Bahamian Selves, a new exhibition honouring the life and legacy of Patricia Glinton-Meicholas – poet, author, cultural historian, and one of The Bahamas' most influential advocates for culture and heritage.

Curated by Letitia Marie Pratt, the exhibition explores Glinton-Meicholas' lasting impact on Bahamian art, folklore, and national identity through a selection of artworks by some of the country's most celebrated artists alongside materials drawn from her research and publications.

The Gaulin Woman is on view through May 2027. Come and visit NAGB to explore this celebration of Bahamian culture and the enduring legacy of one of the country’s most important cultural voices.

Join NAGB this evening for an Artist Talk with Jonnique Beadle as she discusses her solo exhibition Glimmers, moderated by NAGB Education Officer Nowe Harris-Smith. The talk begins at 6:30 pm.

Glimmers centres on memory, ephemerality, and joy, drawing from Beadle’s family archive and childhood photographs to explore the delicate coexistence of grief and remembrance following the passing of her father, artist John Beadle. Through mixed-media collage, image transfers, fabric, and rhinestones, she creates intimate compositions that embrace memory’s fragmented and fleeting nature while holding space for moments of joy.

Join us for an evening of conversation, reflection, and deeper insight into Beadle’s practice and the stories woven throughout the exhibition.

NAGB recently welcomed students and faculty from Ontario College of Art & Design University (OCAD) for a special tour led by our Curatorial Director Jodi Minnis-Rolle. The group explored our current exhibitions including Eddie Minnis: Pot Luck, 10th Double Dutch, What the Landscape Holds, and strolled through our Art Park. A highlight of the visit was unexpectedly crossing paths with Bahamian artist Eddie Minnis himself during the tour, making the experience even more memorable.

Tours at NAGB offer an opportunity to connect more deeply with Bahamian art, history, and culture through conversations and shared experiences across our spaces.

Join NAGB for the opening of Glimmers, a solo exhibition by artist Jonnique Beadle. Opening on 29 May at 6:30 PM in the Project Space Gallery, the exhibition presents a series of mixed media collages that explore memory, ephemerality, and joy through family archives and personal recollections. Two years after the passing of her father, John Beadle, Beadle turns to memories of childhood, family gatherings, and intimate moments, using collage to reflect the fragmented and transient nature of remembrance.

Glimmers draws on the idea of “micro moments” of joy and well being, presenting layered compositions made with image transfers, fabric, rhinestones, and symbolic materials. The exhibition reflects on the delicate coexistence of grief and joy through memory and loss. The exhibition is curated by Jodi Minnis-Rolle, and an artist talk with Jonnique Beadle will follow the opening.
