The first Motswana Botswana Police Service Commissioner, Simon Adolph Hirschfeld, was this morning buried in Gaborone. He passed away last Wednesday (3 June 2026). Hirschfeld, who was described as a pioneer and legend for the country’s law enforcement, served as Commissioner for 24 years, from 1971 to 1995.

Among his most significant contributions were the full localisation of police leadership and the historic introduction of women into the force. He passed away after witnessing the appointment of the first woman police commissioner.

For her part, the Police Commissioner, Dinah Marathe, paid tribute to former Commissioner Hirschfeld for his historic introduction of women into the organisation, stating that she was humbled to be the first woman Police Commissioner, thanks to his inclusion initiatives.

In the picture, the police pallbearers are wearing the first Bechuanaland Mounted Police uniform as a symbolic gesture honouring the country’s first Motswana police chief.

The Bechuanaland Mounted Police was formed in 1885 with 100 men, its first Commissioner being Lieutenant Colonel Frederick. Headquartered in Mafikeng, the force played a key role in the Matabele War of 1893. After Botswana’s independence in 1966, the force became the Botswana Police Force. In 1971, Hirschfeld was appointed the first Motswana Commissioner, deputised by Mompati Merafhe.
