An Exciting and Powerful Moment For Botswana !!

The Khama III Memorial Museum, in partnership with Royal Pavilion & Museums ,Brighton & Hove UK, is proud to announce the repatriation of 44 cultural heritage items back home to Serowe, Botswana.

These items were collected by Rev Willoughby during his time with the Gammangwato community around 1893, making many of them over a hundred years old. Their return allows us to reconnect with objects that carry deep history and meaning for the community.

We expect to receive these items in Botswana by the end of April 2026, a moment we are all looking forward to.

This moment speaks directly to our theme:
Making Connections: Our Past, Our Identity.

It is about reconnecting with where we come from.
It is about reclaiming our identity.
It is about telling our story in our own voice.

Repatriation across Southern Africa remains limited, making this a meaningful and forward-looking step. But more importantly, this is about bringing history back into the hands and hearts of the community it belongs to.

This is more than a return; it is a reconnection.

There are 44 cultural objects connected to Serowe and the Gammangwato community that form part of an important history,and a new chapter.

As we continue our conversation about repatriation and heritage, it is also important to look back at the people who were part of these histories.

Today we look at Rev. William Charles Willoughby (1857–1938), a missionary from the London Missionary Society who lived among the Bangwato in Palapye in the 1890s.

During his time here, Willoughby learned Setswana and worked closely with Kgosi Khama III. He served as an English language secretary during important negotiations with British authorities and later accompanied Kgosi Khama III, Kgosi Bathoen, and Kgosi Sebele on their well-known journey to England in 1895.

Like many missionaries and researchers of that time, Willoughby also took a strong interest in local culture and traditions. He wrote about what he observed, took photographs, and gathered materials connected to everyday life in the region.

Today, these historical records and collections help museums and communities better understand the past and the stories connected to places like Serowe and the wider Gammangwato region.

The museum is inviting artists and designers to submit an Expression of Interest (EOI) to design a Lekgapho-inspired textile artwork for a museum installation. The design will be printed on fabric and used to enhance the museum’s cultural spaces.

Artists are encouraged to submit:
• A portfolio or samples of previous work
• A brief concept or idea inspired by Lekgapho traditions
• A short artist profile and contact details

The museum is calling on textile printing companies to submit quotations for printing custom-designed fabric that will be used for museum decoration and exhibition purposes. The design will be culturally inspired and created specifically for the museum space.

Interested companies are requested to email their quotation, fabric options, printing techniques, estimated production timelines, and examples of previous work to the Museum Curator at [email protected].

At Khama III Memorial Museum, we remain committed to supporting initiatives that uplift and empower our community,especially those that give children a positive, enriching space to grow. One such initiative we proudly host is Sjapi Karate Club, a home where young people learn discipline, confidence, and healthy hobbies. 💙🥋

This past week, the children of Sjapi Karate Club travelled to Gaborone for a major tournament. As always, the focus wasn’t on medals,it was on experience, exposure, fun, and development. With this club, the journey has always been more important than the podium.

But they surprised us all by returning home with outstanding results:

🥇 9 Gold Medals
🥈 2 Silver Medals
🥉 4 Bronze Medals
🏆 4 Trophies (including individual kata awards)
🏆 …and one special trophy dedicated to Khama III Memorial Museum for our continued support.

We are incredibly proud of every single child who represented Sjapi Karate Club with passion, discipline, and courage. Your growth inspires us, and your achievements remind us why creating supportive spaces for children truly matters. 💪✨
