Book of the Week:
This week we're featuring a newly acquired book that would appeal to readers of west coast history. The Sea Runners by Ivan Doig is a novel based on an actual story of four Scandinavians working as slaves for the Russians in 1853, present day Alaska who manage to escape. The period is deftly recreated, and the narrative written at a good, even pace. For those who like a bit of harrowing adventure, this is for you!

Book of the Week!

A new addition to the Library, this book about Dennis Johnson was written and produced by Sarah and Peter Dixon in 1979. The story portrays Dennis's experiences at the age of thirteen, growing up on Gilford Island. The book is written with a youthful reader in mind, yet is good reading for anyone interested in boats, fishing and First Nations culture in a small coastal community. There are numerous very good black and white photos!

It's been an exciting year for our director Joyce Wilby. This week she is in Victoria, accepting the provincial Medal of Good Citizenship that we nominated Joyce for in the spring.

Robin Quirk came and took some great pictures of Joyce for the website: https://www2.gov.bc.ca/gov/content/governments/celebrating-british-columbia/honours-and-awards/medal-good-citizenship/latest-recipients.

When the family sends us photos of Joyce receiving her award, we'll post it!

Staff at the Alert Bay Library and Museum have been working on an exciting new digitization project that puts a number of the images in the Library collection online. The collection the Library staff have focused on consists of photos taken by the late newspaperman Ronald E. Shuker of buildings, people and events. The photos number close to 2500, and 44 issues of the newspapers he started, the Bulletin from 1939 and the Pioneer Journal from 1939 to 1941.

To search the images, please go to the library website: https://alertbay.bc.libraries.coop/ and the menu Search Books & Photos.
