? 2026 marks the 175th anniversary of the Enrolled Pensioners’ Scheme at .

After the end of the Upper Canada Rebellions, British regulars were no longer needed at the fort. Instead, Enrolled Pensioners (retired soldiers) were brought in to maintain the fort and farm the surrounding military reserve starting in 1851.

Make sure you check out the pensioner’s cottage and garden on your next visit to the fort and stay tuned for more posts throughout the year as we celebrate this history.

Happy !

Queen Victoria ruled Great Britain and Ireland from 1837-1901. Under her reign, saw significant changes and served many roles.

In 1837, Malden was a key outpost defending the Canadian border from rebels and their American sympathizers.

By 1859, Fort Malden had been transformed into the Malden Lunatic Asylum, housing individuals with mental illness.

In 1870, the asylum had closed, and the buildings and grounds were used as a lumber yard and planing mill starting in 1875.

All of this occurred under the reign of a single monarch!

wishes you a great long weekend and we hope you visit soon to experience the fort’s history firsthand.
