And... the first peony of the 2026 season is 'Sprite'. We are very thankful to the Canadian Peony Society who years ago donated a collection of peonies to the Annapolis Royal Historic Gardens. 'Sprite' may be the first, but there are many more to come over the next few weeks!

Drum roll please... the first rose of the 2026 season is the Wingthorn rose (Rosa sericea 'Pteracantha').
Native to China and the Himalayas, it is noted for its large, translucent crimson thorns that glow like rubies when backlit by the sun. It is also one of the earlier roses to bloom each year.
