This picture in the street is of the train station in Arnold’s Cove.

Established during the early 20th century as part of the Newfoundland Railway’s expansion across the island, the Arnold’s Cove train station served as a critical hub for transportation and trade along the Isthmus of Avalon. Through fog, wind, and winter snow, the arrival of the train brought mail, freight, and passengers to this remote outport, linking coastal communities to the heart of Newfoundland. The station bore witness to decades of social and economic change until the closure of the railway in 1988 marked the end of an era in Newfoundland’s transportation history.

This picture in the street is of Harbour Buffet.

Harbour Buffett, located on Long Island in Placentia Bay, was more than a dot on the map of Placentia Bay — it was a lifeline for generations of Newfoundlanders. From cod fishing to church bells, the island thrived through the early 1900s until the resettlement program of the 1960s turned its lively coves into quiet relics. Today, its weathered buildings and empty shoreline tell a powerful story of resilience, tradition, and change.

This picture in the street is of Haystack.

Before resettlement in the 1950’s, Haystack in Placentia Bay was home to a close-knit outport community that thrived on fishing, small-scale farming, and shared resilience. Families lived simply but richly by hauling cod, cutting wood, and gathering for kitchen parties. Though now abandoned, the echoes of the island life still linger in its overgrown paths and weathered foundations.
