The last few nights have been floodlit by a bright full moon,
the kind of moon featured in two works at the Shore Line
Gallery’s latest show.
One is by Teddy Sologuk called “Moonlight Ripples”. In it
the moon shines out of a dark sky onto the ocean, catching
the tops of waves. There is a feeling of turbulence and
motion.
The second painting is quieter. It is by Michael Hatcher and
is called “Moonlight Reflections”. The moon is mirrored
perfectly on calm water by the shore. The entire scene is
bathed in the moon’s subdued light.
In Sologuk’s work, our viewpoint is from the shore looking
out to the sea. There is only the sky, the moon and the
restless waves.
Hatcher takes the opposite view, looking from the water
towards the shore. Snow glows softly on the rocks by the
shore. Woodlands crowd the shore, dark then fading to
blue grey where the trees meet the sky. The moonlight
shines onto a still landscape.
Hatcher’s painting is hung near the beginning of the display.
Sologuk’s is one of the last at the end of the hallway. There
are lots of artworks between them. Next week, a look at
some of them.
