Now on View
Kim Spink, Ron Moppett, Han Sungpil

To gardeners, art lovers, drawing enthusiasts, and anyone who feels a connection to the natural world, you are warmly invited to visit Drawings from a Gardener, an exhibition of exceptional botanical illustrations by Master Gardener and Society of Botanical Artists Fellow UK, Kim Spink.

Gardening calls for attention, patience, knowledge, discernment, and care. Botanical illustration requires many of the same qualities. Through careful observation, botanical illustration celebrates the beauty and details that make plants so remarkable, mysterious, and wonderful, revealing the rich wonder of the botanical world.

Kim Spink’s botanical illustrations follow in the long tradition of botanical art, from the Greek physician and botanist Crateuas in the 1st century BCE, through Leonardo da Vinci, Otto Brunfels, and Gherardo Cibo during the Renaissance, Giovanna Garzoni during the Baroque period, to the exceptional 18th - century artist and naturalist Maria Sibylla Merian, who is credited with bringing together ecology, entomology, and botany, and helping move natural history from myth toward empirical science.

This exhibition is not to be missed and offers a wonderful opportunity to experience these remarkable works firsthand—and perhaps even add a piece to your collection.

And during your visit you can enjoy new works by Ron Moppett, including two wonderful still life paintings from 2004, and recent works by Han Sungpil.

We look forward to seeing you at the gallery.

Introducing Kim Spink
Drawings by a Gardener
Thursday, May 14 | 5:00 - 8:00 p.m.

TrépanierBaer is delighted to announce the representation of Kim Spink (b. 1956, Calgary, Alberta). Spink is a graduate of the Alberta College of Art and Design (AUArts, 1979) where she trained as a graphic designer. As a professionally trained graphic designer her practice evolved over 40 years through independent consultancy, a partnership in a communications design studio, and work with several major corporate design departments.

Now retired, Spink is an avid flyfisher, hiker, master gardener and committed botanical artist. Her connection to nature is intimate, profound and attentive. Spink draws inspiration from the long history of botanical art from antiquity through to the 17th century German naturalist and scientific illustrator Maria Sibylla Merian, and more recently and closer to home Mary Schaffer Waren and Mary Vaux Walcott.

Spink has a strong sense of composition and clarity in her work combining design thinking with botanical knowledge. Working primally in coloured pencil and graphite she creates detailed portraits of plants that focus on a single structure or a small group of forms. With her controlled yet gentle touch Spink magically teases the beauty and detail out of very plant she draws. The precise and nuanced tonal transitions that she creates can only be achieved by an artist with a profound understanding and respect for the materials she uses, a tender touch, and patient and acute concentration. Within the long history of the genre Spink’s drawings are nothing short of remarkable.

Her work has been selected for major international exhibitions, including the American Society of Botanical artist Annual International Exhibition at the Society of Illustrators New York, The New York Botanical Garden Triennial, and exhibitions at Wave Hill among others. She is a Member of the American Society of Botanical Artists, and Society of Botanical Artist UK Fellow.

Contemporary Calgary’s
LOOK26 Gala: Off The Path

THANK YOU!

We’re still glowing from Contemporary Calgary’s LOOK26 Gala: Off The Path—and we’re happy to share a few highlights from the night.

The evening was brought to life by artist duo DaveandJenn—LOOK26 Gala Curators—whose whimsical, imaginative vision infused the event with an enchanting, spirited energy. Every detail, from the performances to the cuisine, was designed to spark curiosity, connection, and celebration. TrépanierBaer extends heartfelt thanks to all attendees, collectors, staff, volunteers, sponsors, and supporters who helped make LOOK26 such a memorable experience for guests, our artists, and Contemporary Calgary.

The LOOK26 Art Auction, supported by Heather Edwards, achieved exceptional results, with 100% of works sold across live and silent auctions, for a total of $583,356. The sale featured 88 works, with select pieces exceeding twice their fair market value. In total, the event raised $1.2 million to support CC’s ambitious exhibitions and public programs.

TrépanierBaer’s featured artists included: Jen Aitken, DaveandJenn, Chris Cran, Curtis Cutshaw, Fred Herzog, Paul Kuhn, Ed Pien, Michael Smith, Han Sungpil, René Pierre Alain, and Carol Wainio—along with a work by John Adams Griefen, donated by Cheryl Gottselig and Yves Trépanier.

Yves Trépanier also acquired Faye HeavyShield’s powerful work titled Pierce, featured in the live auction.

Thank you again for being part of LOOK26. We can’t wait for next year’s gala—and to come together once more to celebrate and support Contemporary Calgary.

Plural 2026: Recap

Recap of our time at the 2026 Plural Foire d’art contemporain. TrépanierBaer featured works by Han Sungpil and Luanne Martineau.

We are pleased to announce that Han Sungpil’s Frozen Fire 101, Grisette Mountain and Mt Dromore, Jasper, 2025 was one of this year’s acquisitions by the National Bank. Placing several works in private collections we were thrilled by the reception of our artists and our participation in the fair.

We are grateful to everyone who visited our booth, shared in great conversations, and supported our artists. A heartfelt thank you to all the collectors, curators, colleagues, and friends who made this year’s fair such a success.

Plural Feature

TrépanierBaer is pleased to feature two outstanding works Commissure Carol, 2019 and Keyhole Fold, 2025 by Luanne Martineau at Plural 2026.

Luanne Martineau is a pioneering figure in contemporary textile-based abstraction, redefining the terms of painting through fibre. Her work collapses the boundaries between image and object, replacing the flatness of painting with dense, hand-built surfaces that are tactile, irregular, and insistently physical.

Working with wool, felt and paper Luanne Martineau introduces labour, material excess, and a distinctly bodily presence into a field historically defined by control and refinement. Martineau expands the language of abstraction—positioning textile not as support, but as a primary, critical medium.

One of her central concerns is dismantling the hierarchy between “craft” and “high” art. Her work has been widely exhibited across Canada and internationally, including at major institutions like the National Gallery of Canada and the Musée d’art contemporain de Montréal.

We look forward to seeing you at fair.
