Steve Mitts -Art of Distinction Steve Mitts - Art Of Distinction
My art is available to purchase. Steve Mitts was born in Hay River, North West Territories, Canada in 1968.

His formal training included Red Deer College and University of Calgary where he earned his BFA

His work comes from the past, primarily from the period 1450-1570. For the most part his work deals with the common interests of two different Centuries, ours and the age of the Renaissance. 500 years have passed and yet human nature prevails. Steve’s art looks at the common emotions and situations fel

t in our culture and places them in a period where they also existed. The subject matter in his paintings usually involves people contemplating an idea, or feeling. They may be playing a musical instrument or singing, reading a letter or looking out a window in hopes of seeing someone they miss. The characters may also be interacting with one another in conversation or debate or even sharing a simple smile. All of these behaviours existed then as they do today, but it is the period that they come from that captures his attention. Steve is constantly exploring new themes and subject matter that was present during the Renaissance and would continue to work in a contemporary period. He strives not only to paint these concepts he loves, but he continuously expands and develops his painting techniques to compliment a period in time that demands perfection. Steve’s unique technique includes ageing his canvases with various gels and mediums that allow cracks and imperfections to occur. Working with glazes and layers upon layers of tinted gels and washes he is able to achieve a multilayered depth of surface. Most of Steve’s paintings are done in acrylic on canvas. He has also done considerable work on panels as well as huge ceiling paintings for a Historical Building in southern Ontario, Canada. The paintings of Steve R. Mitts are featured in collections throughout Alberta, Canada the United states as well as into Europe.

“Quiet Musings” is my latest piece and features my youngest daughter, Katie, in what became a wonderful collaboration between us. As a father of two daughters, I have long drawn inspiration from my family, with Cheryl and the girls often appearing throughout my work in subtle and meaningful ways. Sometimes it is their hands holding an object, a posture, or simply a quiet presence that finds its way into a painting. With this piece, however, I wanted to fully realize an idea I had been developing for some time. The process carried a sense of curiosity and playfulness that made the work especially meaningful to create together, and after allowing the piece to evolve naturally, it has finally come to completion.
This painting will be joining my exhibition at The Marrow and, depending on timing and availability, may also be featured in my upcoming solo exhibition this August at the Red Brick Common Gallery in Stony Plain. https://www.facebook.com/MarrowCamrose

I’m happy to share that my newest addition to The Marrow exhibition is now on display. "Captivations" is a diptych shallow-relief piece from my ongoing woodblock series, exploring the different interests, focuses, and pursuits that shape the human experience.
It’s a work meant to draw viewers in, encouraging exploration, reflection, and discovery through layered narratives and detail.
The Marrow is the perfect space for this kind of experience, inviting people to slow down, take in the ambience, and engage with the work while dining https://www.facebook.com/MarrowCamrose

I am proud to present this catalogue of selected works from my HELD IN BALANCE exhibition, currently on display at the Red Deer Museum and Art Gallery.
Museums and public galleries offer a different experience than most private galleries. Rather than focusing primarily on sales, they encourage reflection, conversation, and a deeper engagement with the work itself. They create a more inviting and personal space in which viewers can connect with both the artwork and the artist behind it.
This catalogue serves as an introduction to the paintings included in the exhibition, offering insight into each piece while also providing information for further inquiries regarding the works, commissions, and purchases.

I am excited to finally reveal "Captivating" it presents as a Diptych that opens and explores simultaneous narratives and the different interests, focuses, and pursuits that shape the human experience. Music, observation, and reflection move together throughout the painting, creating a visual dialogue between individual pursuits and collective experience. The fragmented structure reinforces how lives, ideas, and moments overlap, revealing the complexity and richness found within interconnected narratives. This piece will be joining my ongoing exhibition of my paintings at The Marrow https://www.facebook.com/MarrowCamrose and will be part of my Solo Exhibition at the Red Brick Common Gallery in Stony Plain beginning August 6th. You can also visit the Red Deer Museum to check out my exhibition of paintings until July 30th. https://reddeermuseum.com/held-in-balance-a-symmetry-between-structure-and-narrative/ My studio is quite busy so I thank you for all your interest!

Thank you to the Red Deer Museum and Art Gallery for hosting such a memorable opening night on Friday, and for offering me the opportunity to speak and share my work more deeply on Saturday. The entire weekend was an incredibly rewarding experience, one that reminded me why these moments of connection around art matter so much.
From the thoughtful conversations to the genuine curiosity and engagement of those who attended, I felt a real sense of dialogue unfolding, between artist and viewer, but also between the works themselves and the many interpretations they invited. It was especially meaningful to be given a space where the work could breathe, where viewers could slow down, reflect, and find their own connections within it.
I’m deeply grateful for the warm welcome, the support, and the care that went into creating such an open and engaging environment. Weekends like this stay with you, they reaffirm the value of sharing, of listening, and of continuing the creative journey. Special thank you to all those who traveled to be there for either the opening night or Saturday talk, your presence was much appreciated! If you get a chance to visit this exhibition at the Red Deer Museum and Art Gallery please do, it is a wonderful experience! Most pieces are available for purchase, inquiries can be made through DM or at https://www.stevemitts.com/ please visit https://reddeermuseum.com

Thank you to The Marrow Restaurant & Lounge for your continued support of what I create. Such a beautiful venue here in downtown Camrose.

This exhibition has come together quickly, and I would love for you to join me at the opening reception on May 1st from 5–8 PM at the Red Deer Museum and Art Gallery.
The exhibition runs through July 30 and offers a meaningful setting for this body of work. It feels especially significant to be showing here again. I graduated from Red Deer College 35 years ago with an Art Diploma before going on to complete my BFA at the University of Calgary.
Returning to exhibit in a place where I once showed work as a student makes this experience all the more rewarding. I hope to see you there. https://reddeermuseum.com/held-in-balance-a-symmetry-between-structure-and-narrative/

I’ve just finished installing my exhibition Held in Balance at the Red Deer Museum and Art Gallery, and I’m sitting with a deep sense of gratitude. It’s a humbling experience to see the work come together in a space like this.
Showing in a public gallery is very different from the private gallery world. In private galleries, representation often comes from a belief in both the work and its place in the market. There’s an energy around visibility and sales, and a sense of being part of a larger roster.
Public galleries offer something entirely different. The focus shifts toward education, reflection, and engagement. There’s no sense of competition for space, the work is given room to breathe. The walls aren’t crowded, and the viewer is invited to slow down, spend time, and really enter into the work. It becomes less about transaction and more about connection.
To be the sole artist in the space, and to have the work presented in this way, is genuinely humbling. I’m grateful to have been selected and to be given the opportunity to share this body of work in an environment that encourages presence, understanding, and dialogue.

Thank you to all that were involved with making this possible! Please join me at the opening of this exhibit Friday May 1st 5-8
