We’ve made some huge changes in our direction over the last 5 years, but the biggest commitment by far has been the addition of this amazing human. Chris Bartolomie has had a full career supporting arts and culture at a governmental level. What does she do with her supposed ‘retirement’? She comes to our gallery to work tirelessly to support the trajectory of our mid and later career artists as they move from commercial practices to find space in institutional and corporate collections, international residencies and public gallery exhibition opportunities. Her first year with us has been marked by gathering intel and coaching artists on cv and available opportunities, while simultaneously achieving some super successes for our artists who have worked tirelessly to deserve the accolades. Keep watching for where we are heading next……we might just surprise you!

The Valley Project space is just beaming with potential! We are preparing this lovely L shaped gallery space to house our VALLEY PROJECT, beginning Jan.1, 2027. Phase 1 expressions of interest have already begun, so send us a note right away to [email protected]. Your email should include the following info: *your preferred month to exhibit
*your exhibition concept (this doesn’t have to be a full proposal for stage 1, just a summary)
*curators, artists or others whom may be involved. *nature of the work to be installed (and any exceptional installation needs that may not pre-exist in the space)
Some of the conditions that we may have hinted, but maybe are not yet clear:
*we are only interested in projects or artists with a distinctly non-commercial intention for this space. Valley Project is about furthering the public experience of concepts meant to inspire discourse, inquiry and transformation. *elevation gallery is not the final judge of successful projects for the space, nor are we taking anything from these installations/artists…..we are not favouring our own artists and are actively seeking proposals from outside of our roster. Our role is to support the project, and encourage our active client base to engage with it! Reach out!

Well, here is a risky bit of business! Introducing, Valley Project, a 500+ square foot professional work and gallery space located within Elevation Gallery’s high-traffic commercial premises in Canmore. Its function will be distinctly non-commercial: it exists to further public understanding of contemporary art practice, and to give Canadian curators and artists a professional, well-attended venue for projects that would not otherwise reach a tourism-scale audience in a mountain community.
Programming will rotate monthly, aligned with Elevation Gallery’s own exhibition calendar, and is curated primarily by independent Canadian curators and artists from outside of Elevation Gallery’s represented roster. Selection is by open application based on past work, by an arms length committee. CARFAC fees apply. (Ideally) Launching January 2027, with expressions of interest open immediately. Though we’ve been posting images for this upcoming exhibition by Marcia Jean Harris for a few weeks, we’ve seen the pieces still transitioning in quiet, small marks that build impact. Paintings often continue to evolve after the artist has said ‘done’…..the challenge is to know the exact moment when the tipping point arrives. One brushstroke beyond that becomes ‘overworked’. This exhibition work has shown such refinement and restraint. We are excited to share it with you! Black/Light & Colour opens this Saturday, 2-6pm. Marcia will be speaking at 3 ish!

We’re holding over John Ross’ exhibition for another week. There is so much richness to discover in John’s concept development, and I so wished that every visitor had been in the gallery for his artist talk. Here is a short clip of ◼️ John F Ross ◼️ and I talking about the philosopher behind the “Urn of Invention” which has so informed this artists practice over the years.
