Hello butter makers! Here's the Buttermilk Biscuit recipe from the recipe book Good Cookin' From the Heart of Virginia.
Virginia Buttermilk Biscuits

"A Southern classic."

Yield: 18 biscuits

2 cups flour

2 teaspoons baking powder

1 teaspoon sugar

1½ teaspoon salt

1/4 cup plus 1 tablespoon shortening

1/2 teaspoon baking soda

1 cup buttermilk

Sift flour, baking powder, sugar and salt into medium bowl. Cut in shortening with pastry blender until mixture resembles coarse meal. Dissolve soda in buttermilk; pour evenly over flour mixture, stirring until dry ingredients are moistened. Turn dough out onto floured surface; knead 10-12 times. Roll out dough 1/2-inch thick and cut with 2-inch biscuit cutter. Place biscuits on greased baking sheet. Bake in preheated 450° oven for 10 minutes, or until lightly browned.

I have made the above recipes with great success. Actually any of the recipes from Yum and Yummer cookbook have been easy and tasty. I highly recommend the cookbook. All recipes have a video you can watch.

We were really shaking things up at our fourth museum Make It and Take It event. We had 8 ladies as guests with Ida And Sandy showing how its done. Once the butter was made we could chose from celtic sea salt, fresh dill, fresh garlic or fresh chives to season the butter. Some ladies saved their buttermilk. Please watch for an additional post with buttermilk recipes.
Ladies please comment how you used your butter and what you flavoured it with. Thanks for a fun afternoon.
Our final event will be making a stained glass angel ornament in November. Details to follow.
