🌊 The tide is coming in, and it's bringing a new Collection Facility Feature post!

"The 375-ton barque, Lizzie Cameron, was built in Souris West in 1874 by James McLauchlan. The three-masted ship was used to transport various cargo between PEI and England. The Lizzie Cameron completed many voyages but the ship would meet its fate in June of 1882 when it collided with an iceberg and sank in the Atlantic Ocean, 150 miles east of Newfoundland. It is unknown if any of the crew survived. The artist of this painting is unknown.

Flags were used in combination with each other to communicate the intentions of the ship waiting at anchor. In this painting, the yellow and yellow with blue flags visible at the stern indicate that the ship is requesting permission to enter the port of Souris."

🔎Fresh from the Collection Facility: a new featured item! 💰

"This loonie embodies many firsts - it was the first commemorative coin of 2024, the first circulating coin to commemorate an author, and the first coin to include the new effigy of King Charles III. Issued to celebrate the 150th anniversary of Canadian literary icon, Lucy Maud Montgomery's birthday. Montgomery shares the coin with her creation, Anne Shirley or Anne of Green Gables, one of the world's most enduring characters. First published in 1908, this story has sold 50 million copies and been shared in more than 30 languages.

The coin was designed by Canadian artist, Brenda Jones, who has a special connection to this story. Her grandparents owned the Green Gables house which is now part of Green Gables Heritage Place in Cavendish, PEI. Included on the coin is a small cat which Montgomery often included in inscriptions. The effigy of King Charles is by Canadian artist, Steven Rosati."

🔎Did you know...

Prince Edward Island was once home to the oldest living person in North America? Well, now you do! Meet Jim Hoe of Charlottetown, who passed away on October 16, 1977 – just one month short of his 112th birthday.

Jim Hoe was born in China in 1865 and emigrated to Canada in 1900. At that time, every Chinese immigrant to Canada was required to pay a fee of $100 called a head tax – and Hoe would have been no exception. No other group in Canada has ever been forced to pay a tax based solely on their country of origin.

Hoe was a fun-loving free spirit and travelled all over Canada, but he eventually settled in Charlottetown, working as a chef at the Roxy restaurant into his 90s, where he was renowned for making delicious wonton skins.

This picture of was taken in 1966, when Hoe was around 100 years old. At that time, Hoe was still doing his own shopping and daily chores – and would continue to so until at least the age of 108 (!). We here at the PEI Museum and Heritage Foundation salute the strength and resilience of Jim Hoe, and of the many immigrants like him, who have come here over the years and built a life here on this Island.

If you wish to know more about the life of Jim Hoe and other Chinese Island residents, you should check out the book “Chinese Islanders: Making a Home in the New World,” by Hung-Min Chiang.

📦 From the archives to your social media feed, a new Collection Facility Feature has arrived!

"The “turtle” shape of baby bottles from the late 19th century were designed to allow children to self-feed with the use of a rubber tube. This innovation allowed many mothers to attend to other chores, especially women in the working class. The tubes and bottle shape were difficult to clean, however, and were found to be perfect environments for toxic bacteria without proper sterilization methods. These bottles gained the nickname “killer” and “murder bottles” and were banned in 1910."
