PROGRAM SPOTLIGHT: Little Creators
👶 Calling all parents and caregivers: Introduce your little ones to the magic of art and sensory exploration!

The Art Gallery of Northumberland is thrilled to launch Little Creators, a brand-new weekly program designed for children aged 0 to 4 years and their grown-ups.

✨ What to expect:
A welcoming space for curious minds to explore art, sensory play, and open-ended discovery. Each session offers a thoughtfully prepared collection of sensory art and play invitations. Children are free to touch, feel, build, create, and draw at their own pace.

☕️ Perk for the grown-ups:
Relax, connect, and enjoy coffee on us! Our incredible program sponsor, Prep Food Co., is graciously providing their signature drip coffee for parents and caregivers during every session.

• Main Gallery: Observed in Motion | Luke Despatie

In Observed in Motion, artist Luke Despatie explores the energy, beauty, and unpredictability of everyday life. Approaching his fiftieth birthday, Despatie began to reconsider the familiar routines that had shaped his painting practice.

• Permanent Collection Gallery: The World We Fear | Simon Martignago
September 12 – November 28, 2026.
In The World We Fear, Simon Martignago explores the ways architecture can give physical form to our collective anxieties.

Whether you are looking for a quiet moment of creative inspiration or an afternoon of local culture, our doors are open!

CULTURE CURATOR: During my travels in Italy, I had the pleasure of seeing Sara Angelucci’s work in Monopoli as part of PhEST – International Festival of Photography and Art. Experiencing her work in an international context was both inspiring and deeply rewarding. It offered an opportunity to see the work anew, surrounded by a different cultural landscape and audience, and reminded me of the significance of artists whose practices resonate far beyond their home communities.

Closer to home, I was equally delighted to see Marie-Jeanne Musiol’s work in a group exhibition at the Ottawa Art Gallery. To encounter her work in such a respected institutional setting was a wonderful reminder of the strength and relevance of contemporary Canadian artistic practices.

Seeing the work of both artists in these different contexts made me particularly reflective about Out of the Enveloping Night at the Art Gallery of Northumberland. It was a wonderful affirmation of the strength of the exhibition and the calibre of programming at the AGN. There is something incredibly rewarding about seeing artists represented elsewhere and realizing that the exhibition we are presenting in Northumberland stands confidently alongside work being shown in larger national and international contexts.

These experiences reaffirmed for me the importance of regional galleries and the role we play in bringing ambitious, thoughtful and significant work to our communities. It was a proud moment to recognize just how exceptional this exhibition is.

Out of the Enveloping Night: Sara Angelucci & Marie-Jeanne Musiol is on view at the Art Gallery of Northumberland until September 5, 2026. If you haven’t seen it yet, don’t miss the opportunity—there is very little time left to experience this remarkable exhibition.

THE LOOKOUT: Throughout July, The Lookout became an open-air studio.

While facing the beautiful southern view of Lake Ontario from Victoria Hall, visitors let their creativity run completely free. From abstract doodles and portraits to random imaginative concepts, your unique notebooks transformed the space.

ART TERM TUESDAY: Cubism

Definition: Cubism is an influential early 20th-century avant-garde art movement that revolutionized European painting and sculpture by abandoning traditional perspective.

Instead of viewing subjects from a single fixed viewpoint, Cubist artists broke them down into abstract geometric shapes—like cubes, spheres, and cones—and reassembled them to show the subject from multiple angles simultaneously.

Examples of Cubism
Pioneered by Pablo Picasso and Georges Braque around 1907, the movement challenged the age-old idea that art should simply copy nature, paving the way for modern abstract art.

Why does it matter?
Cubism matters because it completely changed how humans define art. Before Cubism, Western artists had spent 500 years trying to create the perfect illusion of three-dimensional reality on a flat canvas. Cubism broke that rule entirely.

BEHIND THE SCENES: Summer Studio Highlights: The Art of Oshibana
We are throwing it back to July 15th, when our young creators completely immersed themselves in nature during the launch of our AGN Summer Studio series!

Our first session spotlighted Oshibana—the beautiful, traditional Japanese art form of creating pictures using pressed flowers and natural materials. Our studio was filled with incredible focus and creativity as participants carefully arranged delicate petals, leaves, and stems into vibrant, miniature botanical masterpieces. 🌿👁️
