Now that our final exhibit at our current location is almost ready to launch, we can start focusing on changes to our programming and educational outreach while the Museum and Memorial are in "Dry Dock" for a couple of years. HAMM's operational structure will shift to our mobile entity, which is The Alberni Project (TAP). Same energy and devotion to the act of Remembrance, but shifted in a way to reach a wider audience, which may not have the opportunity to see quality exhibits related to the history of war and peace.

Sorry. Due to a situation out of our control, we have to delay the opening of SILLY OLD BEAR: The Real Story of Winnie-the-Pooh by a week while we track down a delayed shipment of special items.

Several years ago, a regular visitor and supporter donated a small crimson red poppy plant in a 4" pot to HAMM as a gift for our years of programming and as a symbol of hope that we would someday have a building of our own where we could permanently plant the small seedling. Until we are able to fulfil her hope, the plant has been transferred to the home of our founder, where it has been divided and cultivated into several healthy plants, awaiting their final planting, should we be fortunate to bring together a group of financial benefactors for a new facility. Every May, it bursts open its deep red petals as a symbol of hope and remembrance.

HAMM - the HMCS ALBERNI Museum and Memorial

Founded in 1999, the Alberni Project is dedicated to preserving the stories and history of the men who served on HMCS ALBERNI (a Canadian Flower Class Corvette) from 1941-1944. Since that time TAP has expanded from a simple website memorial to a year round traveling exhibit (entitled: The Alberni Project), a registered non-profit society (TAPS), and a year round museum and memorial (HAMM) in downtown Courtenay, BC.

Funded mostly through private donations and corporate sponsorships, HAMM and TAP exhibits have been visited by more than 10,000 people in the years since its founding. With guest exhibits such as ANNE FRANK: A HISTORY FOR TODAY and WAR BRIDES: ONE WAY PASSAGE to HOW I LONG TO SEE YOU: 1914-1918 visitors have enjoyed learning of the individual stories of Canadians in times of war and peace from the Great War to the present day.

Our volunteer staff will help shed extra light on various displays within the museum; displays that are rotated frequently so things are a bit different the next time you visit.

Future plans include electronic tour guides to our collection and remote field trip for schools that can’t travel to HAMM in person.
