Three researchers recently visited the Museum from the Institute of Vertebrate Paleontology and Paleoanthropology (Beijing, China)!

Dr. Jia Jia (Associate Professor/Researcher) compared Mesozoic fossil salamanders found in North America and East Asia. In the first photo, he’s studying a thin section of fossilized bone from a Jurassic salamander.

Mingze Hao (on the right in the second photo) is currently completing his Ph.D. He examined fossilized nest and eggshell pieces from small theropods, including dromaeosaurids.

Finally, Dr. Rui Pei (Associate Professor/Researcher) spent his time studying theropod specimens to compare with those found in China. In the second photo, he’s on the left.

We’re proud to host researchers from around the world, and we look forward to seeing their studies published!

What, you’ve never seen fossils floating on a river?

This fossil extraction story is a great example of “work smarter, not harder.” Earlier this summer, fossil footprints were discovered and reported by Chris Cardinal. Chris is a local fossil enthusiast who volunteered with our team to excavate these fossils for future research and possible display.

Chris discovered these trace fossils in Strawberry Creek, southwest of Edmonton. Because of the location, it was safest and easiest to transport the fossil blocks down the river. Swipe through the photos to see how these specimens found their way to the Museum.

These footprints are definitive evidence of duck-billed dinosaurs walking through the area during the Late Cretaceous. One of the footprints even contains skin impressions!

It’s Fossil Friday! Our Collections Assistant Susanne is holding the cast skull of Lestodon armatus, a large ground sloth that lived in South America during the Pleistocene Epoch.

Did you know Lestodon was one of the largest ground sloths, weighing close to 4,000 kg and reaching the size of an Asian elephant?

Goodbye summer, hello autumn!

Beginning September 1, the Royal Tyrrell Museum will be open from Tuesday – Sunday, 10 a.m. – 5 p.m. The last daily ticket time for Museum entry will be 3:30 p.m., with no admission after 4 p.m.

Have you noticed the lighting update in our “Bearpaw Sea” exhibit? The new lights make visitors feel like they’re underwater as they learn about animals that lived in the ancient Bearpaw Sea.

This short-necked plesiosaur, Trinacromerum osborni, lived in what is now Manitoba during the Late Cretaceous. It probably propelled itself through the water the way a sea turtle does today, and primarily ate fish.
