What is a box if not a place to store collections of your favourite things?
Cindy Matthew's piece 'A Small Space for Big Thoughts (aka Butterfly Effect)' collects many artworks together, including a handmade postcard, dried lavender, and a few other curiositities, encouraging curiosity and connection. Jennifer Gils' Box, 'Chocolate Memento Box' brings together faux chocolates that look good enough to eat as well as natural objects, encouraging fairytale interpretations of the finished box or looking at time in nature as sweet as a box of chocolates.

With just over a week left to view our current exhibition, ‘Markle; content is just a glimpse,’ we thought we’d tempt you with a few photos.

In this first image, we see two artworks:
Left: A graphite drawing titled ‘Barbara’, an intimate portrait of her friend, local author Barbara McLean created by Marlene Markle in 1978.
Right: an oil painting of Marlene by Robert Markle, 1957.

The second image is a video-still from, ‘Markle; content is just a glimpse’, a short narrative video that captures the artist Robert Markle, seen through his wife, Marlene’s eyes. Video co-produced by the DAG and the Tom Thomson Gallery and created by local filmmaker Jesse McCracken.

Project Salamander is up this weekend (on Saturday and Sunday) from 2pm - 5pm at 393673 Concession 2

Featuring artists Maddy Mayo and Tony Masset, this 750m art-installation-walk leads you past several ponds through the forest and into an abstract fairy tale filled with creative & imaginative sculptures and childlike whimsey.

Have you checked out our newest exhibition yet? If not, visit while you have the chance as ‘The Box Art Project’ a revived exhibition from 1986 with Tom Thomson Art Gallery is only up until September 13th.

This untitled 1982 piece in our ‘Markle, Content is Just a Glimpse’ exhibit gives a moment of pause as viewers pass through the gallery.

It stands out on the black wall, drawing eyes to its alluring color, shape, and size. This piece was generously donated to The Tom Thompson Art Gallery by Bernie Lucht in 1994, and has found its way onto our walls this Summer.

The early 1980s was a huge shift for Robert Markle as he left the chaotic Toronto art scene for a more focused rural way of life. It was during this time he began to reconcile with his Mohawk identity, actively incorporating Indigenous cultural symbols, themes, and perspectives into his art.

It was also during this time that he began to transition between mediums, finding a deep love for mechanical whimsy and Ontario folk art.

A romance which laid the groundwork for his famous “whirligig” kinetic wood sculptures later in the decade. One of which you can view Tom Thomson Art Gallery if you haven’t already!
