Encaustic painting is an ancient art that is still used today.

Christopher Kier has spent decades mastering this technique which t mixes molten wax with raw pigments and layering it on canvas to create rich, textured surfaces. This piece by Kier is entitled, Elements of a Desire - Part 3 of 5 is an encaustic on canvas completed in 1990 from the estate of Tom Vance, The last surviving Canadian spitfire pilot who died at 103

Christopher Kier’s work is both sensual and earthy, with organic layers that suggest sculptural depth, evoking the qualities of ancient ruins or archaeological artifacts. Kier’s work, often with iconic vessels, architectural elements, and totemic forms, reference primitive and spiritual themes. The combination of symbolic form and tactile wax layers produces works like this one that are visceral and meditative.
