Quartermain Earth Science Centre

Quartermain Earth Science Centre The Quartermain Earth Science Centre is a museum showcasing the beauty and excitement of geoscience! The museum was officially opened in June, 2011.

The Quartermain Centre highlights the beauty and excitement of geology in the form of exhibits, displays, programs and events. The Quartermain Centre provides visitors with a geological journey through the planets interior, seismicity, volcanism, structure, economics and evolution of fossilized plants and animals. The University of New Brunswick in Fredericton is home to the Quartermain Earth Scie

nce Centre thanks to a $1-million contribution by UNB alumnus and mining executive, Bob Quartermain. Located in UNB’s forestry and geology building, the centre includes dinosaur replicas, a large-scale display showing a journey to the centre of the earth, a working seismograph and a mineral showcase. It also houses a new teaching and computer lab and will serve as a repository for items and information important to New Brunswick and Fredericton geology. The centre, which is the only one of its kind in the province, would not have been possible without the generous support of Dr. Quartermain, whom the space is named after. A native of St. Stephen, Dr. Quartermain graduated in 1977 from the University of New Brunswick with a bachelor of science degree in geology. In 1981, he graduated from Queen’s University with a master of science degree in mineral exploration.

What an incredible time celebrating New Brunswick Mining Week!πŸ”¨πŸ”¨
🀩From discovering the latest in mineral and sustainable practices to celebrating the rich geological resources of our province, to showcase how local geological resources drive sustainable practices. More importantly, it gave our students and researchers a meaningful space to connect, share knowledge, and build lasting relationships with the local industry.
πŸ™ŒA huge thank you to the organizers, industry partners, and the many professionals and our amazing volunteers who shared their expertise and enthusiasm with us this past week. Your support and insight help make these events an unforgettable experience for the next generation of geoscientists!

🧐 CAN YOUR TOWN SURVIVE A LANDSLIDE ? πŸͺ¨

🀩We had a fantastic time hosting the Grade 8 students from Hartland Community School at the Quartermain Earth Science Centre to find out! 🌍✨

πŸ‘©β€πŸ« During their visit, the students got hands-on with Earth science by learning all about natural hazards like landslides and rockfalls. Working in teams, they became Geological engineers for the day, designing and building mitigation structures to protect their miniature Lego communities.

πŸŽ‰ It was incredible to see their teamwork, critical thinking, and creative problem-solving in action!!

Great job EVERYONE and thank you for visiting us! πŸ‘

TODAY!!

*Open to the public and to students

Please join us for a unique, student-driven climate event that brings together science and policy to explore one of the most important challenges of our time.

This new initiative unites students from SCI1911 (Climate Change Science) and POLS1803 (Politics of Climate Change) as they collaborate to present their research in a dynamic undergraduate climate conference.

πŸ—“οΈ Thursday, March 26

🎀 Keynote Lecture
1:00 pm | MacLaggan Hall, Room 53
Featuring Doug Parsons, host of America Adapts, presenting:
β€œIf Climate Adaptation Is So Important, Why Is No One Talking About It?”

πŸͺ§ Student Poster Session
2:30 – 4:30 pm | Engineering Commons
Meet our students, explore their work, and engage in conversations about climate science, policy, and solutions.

πŸ’‘ This is a fantastic opportunity to support our students, network, connect across disciplines, and be part of an important conversation about climate change. These are also courses you may want to consider taking in the future!

All are welcome!! We hope to see you there 😊

πŸŒβ˜„οΈ Asteroids, impacts, and the evolution of life on Earth

What caused one of the greatest bursts of life in Earth’s history and what brought it to an end?

πŸ‘¨β€πŸ« In this talk, Dr. John Spray explores the Great Ordovician Biodiversity Event (GOBE), a time when marine life rapidly expanded across the oceans. Around 467 million years ago, this growth slowed coinciding with a major asteroid breakup that sent debris toward Earth.

πŸ—“οΈ Thursday, March 19th
⏰ 1:00 to 2:00 pm
πŸ“Room 23, Forestry and Geology building

🌠 As fragments began striking our planet, they formed impact craters across regions that are now Canada, Sweden, Estonia, and the United States. While no single impact caused a mass extinction, the combined effects of increased meteorite bombardment may have stressed Earth’s environments, helping bring this remarkable period of life expansion to a close.

πŸ”¬ About the speaker:
Dr. Spray is a Canadian planetary scientist and geologist renowned for his pioneering research on meteorite impacts, frictional melting in rocks, and extreme deformation processes on Earth and other planetary bodies. He is the founding director of the Planetary and Space Science Centre (PASSC) at UNB, where he has led a multidisciplinary research team for over four decades, advancing studies in meteoritics, lunar and Martian materials, and overseeing the Earth Impact Database.

βœ… Spread the word and bring a friend! Join us to discover how events in space can shape life on Earth!

Refreshments will be served. Yum!
