A follow up on the canoe since its move generated lots of interest. The canoe was made c. 1890, was originally birch bark, and likely made at Oromocto First Nation. It was given to the undertaker at Hampstead, Duncan Slipp (1861-1928) by the Chief at Oromocto as thanks for conducting the burials of community members who died in the great influenza epidemic of 1918. Mr. Slipp refused cash, but accepted the canoe instead.

The canoe has been modified considerably over the past 100 years. In the 1920s the birch bark was replaced with canvas and several coats of paint have been applied over the years. The spine and ribs have also been re-enforced with modern screws prior to entering the QC Heritage collection. But even with its modifications, and while large, it tells an amazing story.

Accompanying this image of the canoe is an image of it in its original condition, used at high water at Hampstead by a couple of Slipp women paddling along. (Photo courtesy of a private collection)

The canoe will be a signature piece in our summer exhibition, Duck, Duck, Goose and the Music of the Marsh, opening Saturday, 6 June, 5-7 pm at the Court House.
