Meet the speakers who will be joining us for Curatorial Talk: Paul Seesequasis in conversation with Deanna Nebenionquit, taking place Thursday, 4 June from 5:30-7:30PM, at Steve's Encore Lounge (Sudbury Theatre Centre) | 170 Shaughnessy St, Sudbury, ON, as part of programming for our current exhibition, People of the Watershed: Photographs of John Macfie.
ABOUT PAUL SEESEQUASIS:
Paul Seesequasis is Willow Cree, a registered band member of Beardy’s and Okemasis Cree Nation, a curator, writer, editor, researcher and journalist residing in Saskatchewan.
He is the author of the award-winning photobook ‘Blanket Toss Under Midnight Sun’ (Knopf Canada) in 2019. His 2024 photobook, ‘People of the Watershed: The Photography of John Macfie,’ was released by McMichael on May 07, 2024 and exhibited at The McMichael Canadian Art Collection from May to November. “One of the 10 best things about visual arts in 2024.” – The Globe and Mail.
He has curated numerous exhibitions, including:
• ‘Framing the Creator’s Game: the Kahnawà;ke lacrosse team of 1876’ at the MOMENTA Biennale d’art contemporain, 2025, in Montreak until October.
• ‘People of the Watershed: The Photography of John Macfie,’ opening at The McMichael Canadian Art Collection, from May thru November, 2024, then touring several galleries in the province of Ontario thru 2025-2026.
• ‘Turning The Lens’, most recently at The MacKenzie Art Gallery in Regina, Saskatchewan, in 2023. (previously at The Glenbow (Calgary), The GALT (Lethbridge), Touchstones Nelson (Nelson, BC).
• ‘Enclosing Some Snapshots: The Photography of James Brady,’ which toured Alberta and Saskatchewan from 2020-2023, among other exhibitions.
He has several books upcoming, including Gaze (Knopf), planned for completion in 2026. His writing has been published in The Globe and Mail, Maclean’s Magazine, Brick Magazine, Granta, and The Wall Street Journal, among others. He has done interviews and lectures with CBC Radio, APTN TV, CTV, Yale University, Maclean‘s, Brick Magazine, and Granta, among others.
He is currently the Chair of The Access Copyright Foundation in Canada.
He has received numerous awards and accreditations, including Book of the Year with One Book, One Province (Saskatchewan), The Writers’ Trust Writer Canadian Residence (Dawson City) 2023, Canadian Writer in Residence at Literarisches Colloquium Berlin (2022) and Saskatchewan Council of Archives Community Use Award (2023), among others.

Paul Seesequasis est un Cree de Willow, membre inscrit de la nation crie de Beardy’s et Okemasis. Il est conservateur, écrivain, éditeur, chercheur et journaliste, et réside en Saskatchewan.
Il est l’auteur du livre de photos primé « Blanket Toss Under Midnight Sun » (Knopf Canada), publié en 2019. Son livre de photos de 2024, « People of the Watershed: Photographs by John Macfie », a été publié par McMichael le 7 mai 2024 et exposé à la Collection McMichael d’art canadien de mai à novembre. « L’une des 10 meilleures choses dans le domaine des arts visuels en 2024. » – The Globe and Mail.
Il a organisé de nombreuses expositions, parmi lesquelles :
• « Framing the Creator’s Game : l’équipe de crosse de Kahnawà;ke de 1876 » à la Biennale d’art contemporain MOMENTA 2025, à Montréal, jusqu’en octobre.
• « Les habitants du bassin versant : la photographie de John Macfie », une exposition qui s’ouvrira à la Collection McMichael d’art canadien de mai à novembre 2024, avant de faire le tour de plusieurs galeries de la province de l’Ontario en 2025-2026.
• « Turning The Lens », présentée récemment à la MacKenzie Art Gallery de Regina, en Saskatchewan, en 2023. (Auparavant au Glenbow (Calgary), au GALT (Lethbridge) et au Touchstones Nelson (Nelson, Colombie-Britannique)).
• « Quelques clichés : la photographie de James Brady », qui a fait l’objet d’une tournée en Alberta et en Saskatchewan de 2020 à 2023, parmi d’autres expositions.
Il a effectué des recherches iconographiques pour plusieurs documentaires et autres films. Il est le conservateur du projet en ligne « Indigenous Archival Photo Project », une exploration en ligne de l’imagerie d’archives autochtone à travers l’histoire ; il est présent sur divers réseaux sociaux.
Plusieurs de ses ouvrages sont à paraître, notamment « Gaze » (Knopf), dont la publication est prévue pour 2026. Ses textes ont été publiés dans le Globe and Mail, Maclean’s Magazine, Brick Magazine, Granta et The Wall Street Journal, entre autres. Il a donné des interviews et des conférences pour CBC Radio, APTN TV, CTV, l’université de Yale, Maclean’s, Brick Magazine et Granta, entre autres.
Il est présentement président de la Fondation Access Copyright au Canada.
Il a reçu de nombreux prix et distinctions, notamment le prix du « Livre de l’année » dans le cadre du programme « One Book, One Province » (Saskatchewan), la résidence d’écrivain du Writers’ Trust au Canada (Dawson City) en 2023, la résidence d’écrivain canadien au Literarisches Colloquium Berlin (2022) et le prix « Community Use Award » décerné par le Saskatchewan Council of Archives (2023), entre autres.
