Artwork of the Day - "Solitude" - Oil by Linda Mackey Lang.

Artist Statement: "Seeing a polar bear on ice flows patiently waiting for seals in the Arctic is always an awe-inspiring experience. As the ice rapidly melts, it is becoming ever more difficult for polar bears to find their food."

Did you know❓

Resolute Bay is home to the High Arctic Relocation Monument. This monument is a tribute to the Inuit families who were forcibly relocated to the High Arctic by the Canadian government in the 1950s, particularly those who were brought to Resolute Bay and Grise Fiord.

The artist, Simeonie Amagoalik, was a High Arctic relocatee himself. The monument was crafted using local stone, and stands just meters from the shoreline where his own family, and many others, disembarked in 1953.

Come see my exhibition "The Road Less Travelled" at the Annex Gallery in A Place for the Arts, Bancroft, Ontario. Exhibition runs from Wednesday October 1 to Sunday November 2. I often seek the road less travelled for inspiration and share my stories through my paintings. Painting locations include local lookouts, Newfoundland, Yukon, the Arctic, and Portugal. Some are small en plein air paintings (done on lcoation) and others are larger canvases done in my studio. Prints will be available.

Thanks to my daughter Amanda for your help transporting my large paintings back home. Good bye Fool’s Paradise studio for now. Loved creating there.

Last painting during my artist residency at Fool’s Paradise: “Mother Tree” 40”x30” oil on canvas. Standing under the Black Locust tree and looking up. I was inspired by the burls, bark and branches. More close up tree paintings to come.

Well it’s been a productive 7-1/2 weeks as artist-in-residence at Fool’s Paradise (Doris McCarthy’s former home and studio). Starting with the tree I just finished: “Mother Tree”, 40”x30” oil on canvas not quite finished and showing in reverse order back to my first en plein air painting when I arrived. Click on photo for full image.
I had a plan of what I wanted to achieve here: some plein air paintings, the iceberg with northern lights painting, and the one of Doris’s studio. Apparently Fool’s Paradise had additional plans. As I was painting the studio painting it evolved to a “Cheers to Doris” painting and I love the extra details that I was able to add as a result of painting it in her studio and experiencing this property. The big surprise to me was my connection with the trees. Knowing the history of when they were planted and seeing the photographs of what they looked like when they were younger made me really appreciate every branch and burl. There is so much more I could say and will say - but standing underneath them and looking up intrigued me and inspired me. Having painted the Ontario landscape since the age of 12 I often painted trees but standing underneath this black locust and the copper beech tree was definitely different. When I came back from the Arctic in 2002 and started painting larger and simplified paintings and I struggled with how to approach trees (with all their details). I’m now ready to explore this subject matter more. Stay tuned.

Having a morning coffee in bed and enjoying the view for my last full day at Fool’s Paradise. The birds and squirrels decided to entertain me.
