Hannah Epstein combines textiles and digital media to create characters, immersive environments, and stories that explore contemporary desires and anxieties through a folkloric lens. In her dizzying installation, Plato’s Goon Cave, she stages a slippery allegory of epistemic uncertainty in a media-saturated present.

Plato’s Goon Cave is both a funhouse-mirror inversion of Plato’s allegory, where the cave has become chaotic, fascinating and deeply stimulating, and a logical, if speculative, continuation of the tale. The goons—hulking, but flaccid monsters collectively named after the practice of sustaining a euphoric, trance-like state through prolonged ma********on or other self-soothing, repetitive behaviors—are unchained, complacent, and oddly self-sufficient, goggle-eyed and grinning.

Hannah Epstein: Plato's Goon Cave
on exhibition until May 17, 2026
Curated by Blair Fornwald

Epstein’s installation is populated by hulking, effigy-like monsters, with grinning rug-hooked faces, and monumental yet flaccid bodies assembled from castoffs from the consumer waste stream—bits of fabric and yarn, old clothing, and ratty plush toys. Some are propped up with scaffolding, while others slump lazily in secondhand chairs or against the walls, while AI-generated video projections wash over the walls and across the figures’ limp bodies, animating them with narrative complexity, ontological ambiguity, and something approaching vitality.
